I'll go to any place someone picks...plus y'all can meet my yoga student and his girlfriend....they've never been to India so I'm sure they'll have some opinions to share....

No, and I'm willing to give it a try.

My (ok, limited) experience of the trendier, expensive places is not good, though. How do they serve tea? black tea with hot milk? Yuck! I can drink either English-style tea, or preferably, Indian chai, but this hybrid, at prices such as Rs50 a cup, does not appeal.

In fact, any beverage at Rs50 a cup does not appeal! It's nearly ten times what it "should" cost!

I guess that, even in London, I'm a working-man's-caff person! Give me a bacon sandwich and a cup of brown tea and I'll be happy.

OK, I can do five-star too, so if anybody fancies an occasional posh outing, I'd be up for that!

Look, I'm just the grumpy one here, and if its going to cost me my monthly beverage budget to drink bad tea with you guys, I'm still up for it

. Its the meeting that counts!

I would love to meet at amythest. on my first trip I went there just to check it out -- seem to recall it was on a sunday -- someone told me about the great clothes but I did not feel like paying the AMERICAN equivalent of prices for Indian clothes.

what I remember fondly is that while I looked around the old Hank Williams song "Your Cheatin' Heart" started playing on their system. You have to know Hank Williams to know why this would be the polar opposite of what I would expect a store to play in India! Classic American roots music was absolutely the last thing I expected on a Sunday afternoon in Chennai.

I heard it, stopped, listened, and started laughing uncontrollably. I probably sounded quite insane. A clerk asked if I OK, if I needed help, and all I could say was "Hank Williams" - laugh -- "here" -- laugh -- "India" -- laugh -- "too much"..... he started laughing too, probably at me, the crazy woman, and walked away.

so, yeah...I want to go back to amythest!

oh dear - it looks as if I will have to leave Chennai on 6 January as that is the last day on my visa - so I dont think i can join you all.

Is it definitely fixed for 6th? I had been thinking to get a short extension on the visa to stay on and do the PIO card, but after all the hassles I am thinking just to return to the UK and try there...... I woud love to join you all but not sure of my own plans at the moment..........

I am attending classes at the yoga school from the 1st through the 5th -- Jan. 6 is the day before I get the heck out of town to travel down the temple trail of tamil nadu cities.

now we just need to decide on a time....
