Yes, I was thinking the same. How about the Bristol idea we talked about before? Saturday 5th July? Should give us enough time to organise it.

5 July in Bristol sounds good to me too.

I discovered a good North Indian restaurant in Glasgow last week: Dhabba on Candleriggs in the Merchant Quarter. Not cheap, but an interesting menu. They did a nice veggie stuffed potato dish (Dum Aloo Bharwan), although it was in gravy, unlike the stuffed spud dish I had in Delhi. Good mango lassi as well. I didn't have room for a pudding, but they all sounded good (not just your bog standard British curry house kulfi or icecream).

The same people also have a South Indian restaurant further up the same street called Dakhin, but we weren't in Glasgow long enough to try both, and my other half's naan bread craving was stronger than my dosa craving.

I don't think I've ever had lassi in a restaurant in UK. I must look out for one next time.

Was it as good as in India?

there can be some good lassi to be had in the small not-so-noticeable shops in brick lane in london.

Thanks Almoraboy.

I've probably been to restaurants that have lassi on their menu but I never thought to lookout for one. I've been to brick lane many times but not recently. Places like Southall would be another good bet to find good lassi.

I'm afraid I can't compare Glasgow vs Indian lassi, as I was too cowardly to drink lassi in India (a friend of my sister thought that the ice/water in lassi was what gave her Delhi belly, so I steered clear).

The Glasgow also had the nearest I've found to masala chai in a restaurant in the UK - what was described on the menu as "Indian tea". It was probably made with a tea bag with spices in rather than fresh ground cardamom & ginger & cloves, and obviously hadn't been boiled for hours (as I was offered the choice of it with or without milk) but was nicely spicy and cardamomy.

The 'Indian Tea' is a bit of an acquired taste, I'm personally not that keen on it, and of course is quite easy to make at home. Shame that some restaurants don't take care about quality of their tea.

Well, that sounds like a date then! Saturday 5th July at Krishna's Inn on the Triangle in Bristol. Shall we meet somewhere first for refreshments or carry on after lunch?

I'll give them a call and book a table - we can finalise numbers later.

Bristol meetup 5th July

This is looking better now. We seem to have seven so far:

Tonylittle (good to hear you might make it Tony)
Kingstonian (perhaps)
Mrs C772
The Londoner
sssall
mikewill (and V)

There must be lots of other Westcountry folk out there. Or even more neighbours from the Principality

Note for mods - maybe this thread shoud be UK meetups - unless you'd like to move this to another Other UK meetups. We all know nothing happens outside London!

Done.

I like Bristol. The approach channel and the currents there are murder, though.

Excellent tugs and pilots.
