Personal Security

Several foreign citizens who were hiking alone or in small groups have been attacked or have disappeared while visiting the Kulu/Manali district in Himachal Pradesh, particularly on some of the more remote trekking routes. Trekkers can register their presence with the local police.

Individuals travelling alone, particularly at night, have been targeted by criminals.

Travellers have been robbed and assaulted when using unauthorised taxis. Information about authorised services can be obtained from the counters at airports, railway and bus stations.

Petty theft is common, particularly in crowded areas such as markets, airports, bus and railway stations and while travelling on public transport where luggage and possessions are particularly vulnerable. Shoulder bags and expensive jewellery (especially gold chains) have been snatched by thieves driving by on motorcycles.

Travellers have also been robbed and assaulted after consuming 'spiked' drinks or food. This has occurred in bars, restaurants and on public transport.

Touts and taxi and rickshaw drivers, particularly those at airports, bus and railway stations, sometimes use aggressive tactics to persuade tourists to accept offers of tickets, tours and accommodation to various destinations. Tourists have subsequently been robbed and assaulted when they reached their destination, particularly in Kashmir or Rajasthan.

Physical harassment of women and sexual assault occur. Women travelling alone, including in rural areas, are at risk of unwanted attention.

It's from the Australian visa department's site kiranlal. It's also on the UK Government site, the German foreign affairs dept. the Irish Foreign Affairs department website and many others too. It is a general warning to ALL.

come on.. $hit happens. every country has its dangerous parts. if a tourist visited the USA, and hungout for a day (or night) in south central los angeles, or east st. louis and something similar might happen to him/her. Heck, you don't even have to be a tourist.

agreed. the u.s. gov't always seems to post warnings of traveling to places like india and such; scare tactics. danger can be lurking around any corner, and generally, is more likely in the dark of the night. a lot of it boils down to using good ole' common sense.

i often wonder if Russia has such a warning. As far as i know, a lot of tourist have a tendency to get mugged, robbed and if you are colored (beaten up by Skin heads there). Some one check the US travel Dept Website.

as far as i am told (by other travellers), russia has some of the worst crime rates among the "white countries" on tourists and travellers.

Hello crvlvr No one's saying that it's only India, you can come to Ireland on holiday now and get shot on the street too I guess I shouldn't have put the personal safety posting.....as we're basically concerned here about the scammers purporting to want travel companions when in fact nothing could be further from the truth....that men are at risk also when making arrangements to travel with people who they may only have met online. No one is exactly who they seem to be online, when met in the flesh. Travellers are a different breed of people that's for sure, and all we would like to see happen is that people have a great and safe trip. You can of course be in a group of people and still get attacked - anywhere in the world and no one would deny that! I believe for now the moderators have got rid of and banned the "members" who were recently applying to one female (5 have pm'd me now with the same kind of story) on IM with three different ID's, to be her travel companion. His itinery was exactly the same as hers in each posting and he had no wish to deviate from it at all. By PM, however, he didn't get his story straight enough. People can be much more vulnerable when travelling in a country like India as you are more than aware - and all we'd like to achieve is to be safe, and not sorry.

Please keep in mind, when asking IM'ers for travel/holiday/trekking partners or just someone to "meet up" with in India during your trips that you make sure that you carefully check them out. Do not give telephone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses AT ALL until you feel you know that they are authentic replies. Some unscrupulous people have been posting requests like this on IM just to make contact with the opposite sex - they normally leave email addresse on their posts. Use your PM before giving out information and don't be afraid to contact a forum leader about it - you cannot always trust the information that is given on ANYONE'S Member Profile or postings. Be safe, rather than sorry

Good to know that some one is watching like a big brother (or sister)!!! And hope that this site remains free from such unscrupulous members out to con young women. And yes, it is true even men should be warned about something similar happening to them as well!!! Equality of the sexes after all!!! If one can report about such members and get them deleted it would be a nice idea to have such a notice on all such posts like looking for travel partners so that it also works as a warning to the young women and as a deterrent to all the conmen. Thanks Shanthi for your good work. Very much appreciated.

Cheers,
Aadil.

meeting anyone off the internet is a risky proposition. I wonder why anyone would feel safe doing that

Are the moderators really going to take on the reponsibility of vouching for IMers? I mean regardless, of how the long the IMer has been a member, or the number of posts he/she has, one can never really tell for sure.

Ladies (and solo male travellers):

NEVER give out your flight details on this website, either on one of the forums or on a PM.....NEVER. Even if you have told a particular male (or female) that he/she is "not going your way" as far as your planned itinery is concerned, you'll stick out like a sore thumb when you arrive at the airport of your destination in India. You may just find that someone unscrupulous is actually waiting for you, having taken the details down of your arrival time etc... These people are not so clever, but they're "cute" and if you've posted your details on this website, they will be able to pick you out of a crowd of newly arrived passengers, believe me.

If someone PM's you, rather than posts on a thread, giving his/her email details, cell-phone number, or other, and seems to want to simply just "fall in with your travel plans" and doesn't seem to have ANY particular plans of their own, REPORT THIS MEMBER TO A MODERATOR AND DO NOT GIVE THE REQUEST THE DIGNITY OF A REPLY

The unscrupulous people who are posting responses to your requests are having their memberships on IndiaMike cancelled and are being banned. BUT they will be back before you can count to ten - they cannot, unfortunateloy be controlled!

Better still - Don't post requests for travel companions at all!!
Better to be safe than sorry!

I always tell folks who are travelling to India alone, and who are nervous about the fact, that it is doubtful they'll be very alone for very long - you'll meet like-minded travellers on your travels who you can see face to face and get to know a little before committing to ANY joint travel!
