woman seeks travel companion this fall (late sept to nov)

I'm a 30-something woman travelling to India on my own for five weeks (end of Sept. to beginning of Nov.). I am looking for a male or female travel companion for at least part of the trip (preferably near the beginning of my trip). My plan is to primarily stay in the north given time restraints and would like to focus on Utter Pradesh, but I am very flexible. I am a fairly seasoned travellor, laid-back, and lots of fun! So if you're travelling around that time and looking for a fun companion, let me know.

I was feeling confident travelling on my own, until reading posts from here, and wonder if any women out there can comment on their independent travels to places like Varanasi?

Hi

Welcome to India Mike

I am yet to get to India, so I cant give specific advice on how worried to be. But one word of warning is that some women posting requests for travel companions get quite alot of replies, and alot from Indian men looking for different kind of companions! So be carefull.

On a lighter note, the vast majority of the women who post here report positive experiences, even the ones who travel on their own.

Does this mean that this forum is causing you to have second thoughts on travelling alone? That shouldn't be the case at all. While I do not say that India is a haven for a solo lady traveller, there's certainly no need to worry.

Take the usual precautions and exercise common sense; and you will be fine.

All the best !

I've been travelling alone in India for more than 30 years; it's really not much of a problem. You meet lots of local people when you're alone; if you're part of a pair or a group, people will not feel welcome to talk with you.

Yes, you do have to be careful; we've talked that one to death, and if you search for WOMEN ALONE you'll find a number of threads dealing with the subject.

If you have specific questions that aren't answered in our archives, yes, be sure to post them here.

I made my first trip to India last winter. Travelled solo for 4 months and loved it. I dressed modestly, Salwar kameez and dupatta which seems to get you a certain amount of respect. I found people wonderful, friendly and helpful.

I loved Varanasi and am looking forward to going back this winter. Though talking to other travellers it seems to be the kind of place you either love or hate.

As the wonderful one mentioned, it's easy to find travelers going your way and cluster together for short periods, or longer, if agreed upon.
I have to say that except for a very few people, I much prefer solo, but I'm a man.

I must disagree with some of you. True India is safe at most times but it can be very dangerous for solo "YOUNGER" female travellers especially blonde white women. A majority of the Indian men sadly even the educated ones perceive foreign women as loose and always ready to have sex. Hopefully this attitude will change as India progresses.
Please be on your guard and enjoy your stay.

This is as good a place as any to find a travel partner or I presume possibly partners plural to get around with until you are comfortable on your own, unless you are looking for a friendship as well or maybe to spend the whole trip with someone.

I know you will want to get things organised a.s.a.p. but please be careful when looking for travel partners in an open forum for all the obvious reasons.

I would keep your plans very flexible then try again on this thread a lot nearer the time and fit in with someone a bit until you feel happy there in India alone. That way you are not getting up someone's expectations about sharing a trip with you.

I have been to India just twice, once (2001) with my wife and once before (1997) alone. They were both special but for different reasons. Going alone was amazing and very contemplative but a bit (but not too) scary at times. Going with my wife though was just very special indeed and it was amazing to share those moments and new experiences in India together.

What I am saying is that it would be good to go with someone for practical reasons, but if you want to share the trip with someone who might become a lasting friend then that would be fine. But if the arranged-companionship is just short-term then you would be best off biting the bullet and going by yourself.

Good luck,
rab
