Hi Sarah

I live close to Mother House in Calcutta. I have also been involved with some volunteer work at times.
The best thing to do would be to contact Mother House and speak to one of the sisters. They will be able to guide you appropriately.

Most people who come to volunteer usually stay at a place called 'Monica House'. It is located inside the sprawling premises of a protestant church and school named 'St.James'. This place is just opposite Mother House on AJC Bose Road.

Cheers
Joe

Hi Sarah
I'll be there working in a hospital in Calcutta during June and July 06. Don't know yet in which hospital I am going to stay. Would be nice to chat a little bit with you. Where are you going to stay there? Do you know someone else in Calcutta or is it also your first time in India?

Hi Benda

Unfortunately my trip is being delayed and i will go in either july/august or oct/nov and i won't know until probabily mid may. It will be my first time in Calcutta also and i dont know anyone there. I was planning to stay in Sudder street area as this seems to be the main location of other volunteers although as to the exactly where i havent made up my mind. i was thinking about doing a home stay for the first few days as they pick you up and show you around. ARe you travelling by yourself and where are you planning to stay?

Cheers Sarah

hi jennifer

Yes, Monica House is indeed a guest house run by the church authorities.
The rent is most probably on a monthly basis (it used to be about Rs 3000/-) which includes breakfast I think. It is quite peaceful.
There may be restrictions for children to some sections at Sishu Bhavan orphanage but, I am sure the MC (Missionaries of Charity) sisters will arrange for your daughter to keep her occupied if and when she is not with you.
Sudder Street is where most of the commercial guest houses are located and most western travellers, backpackers land up there. Maria Guest House is recommended.
The MC sisters may also have information about where the volunteers usually put up.
cheers

Hi Sarah

I don't know exactly where I'm going to stay, the doctors from the hospital are coming to catch me up at the airport. Maybe they're going to show me around a little bit too. If you ever wan't to join me, you can. I think, I'm going to have a little room near the hospital I'm working at. Do you know by now if you are travelling the same months as me? Would be nice to explore the town together

Contact Info

Hi Joe! Do you know their telephone number? (Mother House and/or Monica House).
I have tried the ones I have found on the web but it seems those numbers are not in service anymore.

Are you still planning to be in Kolkata during July 06? I will be there then and I'm looking to see who else will be volunteering during that time.
