Urgent Help Wanted For Lone Female In Rishikesh!

Hi there,

im a british female in Rishikesh, I have felt really unsafe here travelling. To top it all off I have to leave the ashram where I am staying because one of the 'holy men' tried to touch me up. I want a female travel companion either to travel round Rishikesh for my final week here (leaving 22nd May) or MORE IMPORTANTLY to at least share a taxi with to go from Rishikesh to Delhi about 8am on the morning of 22nd May.....it also works out cheaper to share!!!!!!!

Many thanks eneryone, Ella

I am sorry for your awful experiences in Rishikesh that make you feel so unsafe, the holy man touching you was the worst - (hanging my head in shame)
Instead of taking a Taxi to Delhi on 22nd, take a train to Delhi from Haridwar - which you can reach by taking a bus from the bus stand. It is cheaper and in your case - will make you feel safer. Or take a bus to Delhi from Rishikesh bus stand there are plenty of them all day long(it is more comfortable to travel by train than by road).

When you get a chance, do write about the places to avoid, the ashram name being on top.

I agree with elevate, try to take a train during the daytime.
Maybe avoiding isolated/lonely/quite places would help.

What can I say except that I am sorry and shamed, like livin said. I know it’s a traumatic experience but can only wish that this incident does not compel you to make a generalised opinion about India. And yes, it is most important, name the ashram and the person who was involved and once you are out of India, probably mail it to the ashram mail id, and the government of Uttrakhand. Hope you have a pleasant stay and forget the bad experience as an exception.

Agree with livinhimalayas. Just adding that

-sometimes it is safer to travel alone than to travel with unknown partners. If the objective is to travel to Delhi, you don't really need a partner for safety there.
-holy men everywhere are usually more suspect in my eyes, not less.

shame @ holy man

neither holy nor man about the one who tried to touch you.
shame that there are people who have taken the path of spirituality and commit such acts !!!
we guys are better off than them, in that case, at least we dont proclaim ourselves to be holy...
nor do we try to misuse the spiritual knowledge.
people just need to make their choices carefully. what a shame !!! and what has that stupid holy man gained in the name of god. he is only fooling himself by such shameful deeds.

elevate,

As other says you should mention as much details of the ashram, etc., just to help other people.

From Risikesh you can share a rickshaw to Haridwar and then you have several trains to Delhi. Try to get the trains schedule in a cybercafe before leaving.

Agree with all that is said - except the advice to take the rickshaw from Rishikesh to Haridwar. Perhaps Jorge meant taking rickshaw from the ashram area to Rishikesh.

There are multiple reasonable options about to get to Delhi - including direct buses from Rishikesh to Delhi as well to Haridwar. [Buses are not very comfortable but are direct and fair option without existing train reservation.] There are several direct trains from Haridwar to Delhi - including Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi.

Obviously, not clear about elevate's circumstances, but it seems she might be fearful of the 'holy man.' While it is best to leave, do not hesitate to make the harassment public. Outside the segment of younger males - Indians are not tolerant of "misbehavior" of men - holy or otherwise. The purpose is not to suggest confrontation, but to be confident to respond if the situation calls demands it.

All the best!

The best and cheaper way to move from Risikesh to Haridwar is by shared tempo/rickshaw. In any case situation doesn't seems to be very serious as she is staying her last week in the ashram..., obviously I'm not a woman.
