Hello,
If this is going to be your first time in India (and in Asia in general) I would suggest not go alone but with a group. I am really glad that I went with a small, organized tour for the first time. Now, even with this small experience, I am plannig to go on my own in February, knowing more or less what to expect. Anyway good luck with your plans, Guniek |

Travelling Solo.........
Quote:
Hello, I have been a guest of the forum for a few weeks now, and this is my first post ;o) Is it really not advisable to go on your own? I really badly want to go (am planning for Nov and Dec) but i keep hearing lots of conflicted stories about first time travelling to India... Anyways, with that I introduce myself. Is there a part of the forum where solo travellers can meet up or discuss meeting up etc? Anyway, its a great forum and i look forward to learning lots! India bound........... |

now travelling within india has become much cheaper due to the rise in cheaper airlines, but the real aroma of the country can be felt if you travel through the trains.

The first time I travelled anywhere on my own was to India 5 years ago. While initially I was in somewhat of a daze (lack of sleep, culture shock etc.), I managed to have a wonderful time and was really glad I did it on my own. I ended up meeting and travelling with another woman travelling solo. The thing for me that was hardest was not having someone to share the experiences with. That giant bug, the size of a mouse that I saw in the bathroom would have been quite funny with the right person, on my own it was just depressing. The last part of my trip when I was alone again, I was quite conscious of how much more secure I was feeling and that my discomfort initially was due to the unknown, rather than India itself. Also, I am not good speaking to strangers (a bit shy) so I got over this by travelling solo. One piece of advice, if arriving late in a big city have accommodation already booked. Waking up in Mumbai after 4 hours of tossing and turning and not having a clue where I was was a most disturbing feeling. Happy travels.

Thanks for your note!
Hi Casey,
So many Canadians on this forum.... tres cool! Anyhow, thanks for your note of encouragement. I have the same hesitancies as you overcame: really want to experience the incredible of India with someone, yet I am worried about travelling by myself. But i cant seem to get India out of my system, i have researched it a lot, at this point i should just get my ticket and go... Everyone says when you travel solo you meet lots of people however India is vast and chances of meeting people doing the same itenarary as you may be a bit complicated to coordinate right then and there... anyhow, excuse the rambling.... thanks for your note again, p.s what was your route? chocolat - India Bound |

Hi India Bound,
Having recently booked my ticket for December-January, I can tell you that if you're going it's best to book ASAP. You'll get better rates by leaving in November, but flights are filling up fast. I can recommend New Wave Travel in Seattle if you don't want to do all the work yourself. They're quirky, but very helpful. Good luck with your trip; maybe we'll run into you there. |

Well India Bound, my planned route and my actual route were vastly different. I was quite ambitious while doing my planning from home. When I arrived all plans went out the window. I arrived in Mumbai and headed to Goa to relax. While in Hampi I met up with a new friend and we made our way to Rajastan. I went in October and returned in Dec. It is actually really easy to change your itinerary once you are in India. I bought a bus ticket to Hampi, changed my mind and took the train after spending some time in Panjim. It cost about 1.00 CDN. This is the beauty of travelling on your own. You go where you want and when you want. If you meet up with someone else you can make plans together for as long as you want to spend time together. Then when you have different ideas you can part ways. Travelling with a partner from the beginning can be somewhat more stressful in that it may be harder to part ways. Either way you do it, India is an experience not to be missed. |
