Travelling alone north India October-November

Hello everyone,

I will be arriving in Delhi on 20th October 2009.
I am planning to stay for 1-2 days in Delhi and then travel to Uttarkashi, Gangotri & Gaumukh; I will like to stay there for a week and do some walks in the Gangotri area.
Afterwards I am planning to stay for another week-10 days in Rishikesh, to practice Yoga and meditation.
Am 37 years old, male with a lot of travel experience (not in India though)which loves to met people along the journey, share nice experiences.
If anyones is planning to go there at the same dates and feels like catching up or walking part of it together, I would be more than happy...

Warmest regards,

Do note that Gangotri and Gaumukh would be closed - starting today or so....

Factor this in while you are finalizing your plans..

The best time to visit Gangotri is between May-June and September-November. Due to heavy rainfall in the area, visitors may face difficulty reaching the temple during monsoon season (late June to Aug). The temple usually remains open from last week of April to 2nd week of November.

ribhu, I haven't been there before, where can I find the most (latest) reliable info about it?? thanks again, much appreciated.
mikel.

Hi Mikel, Guide did tell you correctly but the date are approximate. The temple will be closed since today for a few months (reopen around Feb-March). Guide would have told you dates for temple, which are decided by Hindu calendar and approximately fall in the same range of months - Oct to early Nov. and then temple closes. Shops and villagers at higher altitude also migrate to places of less altitude. I do not think the trekking route is officially closed but it certainly gets closed by itself due to snow as this also happens to be the time, marking the beginning of winters and possibility of snow increases beyond Harsil and Gangotri and also with dates moving forward. The availability of people to help you, lodging tenting etc begin to become difficult to impossible and therefore it is deemed to be closed.

People have dared to trek in this season on their own. Do not expect much help as the days go by.

here the news msg regarding the closing dates

"Dehradun, Sept 30 (PTI) The dates for closing the Chardham temples including Kedarnath and Badrinath temples have been announced.

While entry to Gangotri, the source of holy river Ganga, will be stopped from October 18, to Yamunotri, the origin of river Yamuna, it will be closed for devotees for winter from October 19, sources said.

The portals of Badrinath will be closed from November 17 and of Kedarnath from October 19.

Besides, the pilgrimage to Madmaheshwar and Tungnath will also be suspended for winter from November 20 and November 26 respectively, they said.

The dates for closing the portals of Rudranath and Kalpeshwar are yet to be decided.

Madmaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath and Kalpeshwar are the remaining four Kedars, part of the Chardham yatra.

The Chardham yatra would remain suspended for six-months during the winter."
