Dear IMers,

I am planning to travel to Kinnaur [Kalpa-Sangla-Chitkul] and Spiti in May 1st week. I am thinking of starting journey to Kinnaur from Shimla from 1st or 8th May.

I [30 yr old working female] am a nature-lover who day/night dream of travelling to mountains. I am looking for like-minded travellers who like to soak in the beauty of mountains. I would prefer female partners or mixed group of males-females.

The plan is to have a mid-budget trip.

The tentative itinerary as of now:

Day 1: Shimla to Sangla
Day 2: Sangla
Day 3: Sangla
Day 4: Chitkul
Day 5: Chitkul to Kalpa
Day 6: Kalpa
Day 7 to 9: Nako,Tabo,Kaza [Spiti]
Day 1o-11: Kaza to Shimla

Above itinerary can be changed to meet personal preferences, but the idea is to spend at-least two days in Kalpa- and Sangla valley.

If due to time-constraints, anyone wants to join till day 6--most welcome.

Thanks!!

Cheers!!

Travel Partners for Kinnaur or Spiti in May

Hello all,

I would like to add to the above post that..

If anyone wants to join for Only Kinnaur/Only Spiti stretch..they are welcome.

The spiti travel duration can be stretched to 2 more days if any fellow travelers want to join only for spiti.

If any family OR group of travelers are planning to travel Kinnaur/Spiti in first two weeks of May, I am ready to be the part of group OR share cab/car charges till Sangla/Kalpa or Spiti.

Thanks.

Shimla to Sangla in a single day is a stretch, even with your own car. Suggest you go to Kalpa first and stay over two nights. Then proceed to Sangla valley and go to Chitkul first and then Sangla (on the way back). From Chitkul to Nako is easily doable in less than a day - though there isnt much to see in Nako. Rest of the trip looks good (I went in May).

Personally, I wouldnt waste any time in Sangla but give more time to Kaza and further afield in Spiti instead. In the Sangla valley, Chitkul is the highlight.

Rest looks good.

Kinnaur-Spiti in May

Hello Vaibhav,

Thank you very much for your inputs.

Should I cut one day from Sangla and add to Chitkul?..Some forums on Indiamike mention both have lost the quaintness & suggest to stay at Rakcham. Kindly explain to me the recent situation as I guess you have visited in May 2014.

If I don't get travel partners, I am planning to do it solo and take public transport for Kinnaur. [Shimla to reckong peo on day 1 and then public transport to Kalpa-Sangla-Chitkul). Kindly give your inputs for same.

I''ll be though hiring a cab from peo to Spiti.

Thanks again.

You can easily take buses for the longer routes at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated car throughout Kinnaur and till Kaza. It's not the most comfortable way but but certainly far more entertaining way to travel. I actually went from 28th April - 11th May and to the same places as you.

Some thoughts -

Day 1 - After overnight bus to Simla, stay 1 day and a night in Simla.
Day 2- Direct bus to recong peo - about 8 hours (on a good day) and then smaller bus to Kalpa.
Day 3 - Kalpa.
Day 4- Kalpa to Recong Peo and to Chitkul - there's one direct bus per day.
Day 5 - Chitkul and perhaps do a round trip to Rakcham.
Day 6- Return to Recong peo and stay overnight. This is a bit forced stay but to board the bus next morning you have to.
Day 7 - Bus to Tabo. You'll reach by afternoon.
Day 8 - Tabo.
Day 9 - bus to Kaza or hire a cab.
Day 10 - hire a cab for Key / Kibber / Langza
Day 11 - Long bus ride back to recong peo. Overnight.
Day 12 - Bus to Simla.

hiring jeep

Thanks a lot for ur suggestions Vaibhav.

I have heard that jeeps can be hired from Peo/Rampur for dropping only at Sangla/Kaza. Did you spot any? I have read somewhere they charge 1/3..i.e around thousand-tweleve hundred for drop.

Can we hire jeep from Tabo to Kaza?..

You have suggested no stay at Sangla..I guess it means its not worth a day's stay.

Thanks a ton.

Still keeping my fingers crossed for travel partners as want to have some good company.

Yes you can hire a jeep from Tabo to Kaza.

Well, the topography is such that from Kalpa when you go Sangla (via Recong peo), you''ll go down in altitude significantly (about 1000 feet from what I recall). At the same time, due to the hydel power project at Karcham-Wangtoo (where the road for Sangla valley diverges from the main Sutluj river valley), the surroundings are very very dusty. This is true for the month of May. Later in the year the scenario changes (post the rains) - in September, Sangla is quite becoming but earlier in the year, when I went, I didnt find it to be as nice as Chitkul so I didnt stay. This is just my personal opinion though and you may differ when you see these places

Yes Kalpa is possible year round. In October you may go till Kaza as well but will have to return from Simla. No idea about cost though DC. Typical large cars (that seat 5-7 people) will be around INR 3000 per day bundled.

Thanks C-Rat. Now I am again planning for either Kinnaur or Arunachal in Oct-Nov 2015.

@Chennaifunn and Shashindra,

If more people join, we can do a trip together. If I don't find any female partners or a group, I will be doing it solo. Will definately ping you if other people join.

Thanks
