You really don't want to travel with much more than a backpack; nobody is going to carry your things for you, especally once you leave a tour. You're on your own as far as luggage is concerned. And in truth, you really don't need much for India; almost anything you might need is available. Pocket knives come in very handy; I mostly use mine for peeling and cutting fruit but there certainly are other uses. Why does this turn you off? Please, do some more reading around here, and read the information pages of a good guidebook, too.

No probs, goodluck with couchsurfing- I had good experiences in new zealand and australia with hosts!
Re: Intrepid- I have toured with them in China and Morocco, and with Gap and Tucan in South America. Have to say that the groups were very cilvilised- people definitely more interested in culture and history than drinking and partying (although Tucan attracts a younger crowd you dont have to take part in the partying if you dont want to)! Also as a single traveller on 2 of the tours I was paired with great female room mates of similar age- still in regular touch with one of them 4years later! It is of course cheaper to do it yourself but the guides and the group were great and I would recommend a tour for a first timer. By the way a 'backpack' means a rucksack- you can get about 20k of stuff in there (if you want to carry that much around)- easily enough to last you over a week before you need to do the laundry! |

I agree with jooley about the benefits of having a tour leader who knows the country and language and does all s/he can to help deal with problems that inevitably arise while travelling in a foreign country. Have travelled extensively by myself and only started booking tours a couple of years ago. So much easier not having to find places to eat and stay every day. This trip I will probably travel for 4 weeks by myself and 2 weeks with Intrepid.
I usually try not to carry much more than 10kg when I travel. My Nepalese friend advised me to go to India with an empty backpack as everything I will need can be easily and cheaply purchased there. Comments please? Sounds like your plans have really progressed, CF. The tour I am planning on booking (http://www.intrepidtravel.com/tripnotes/HKT/2009-01-01) will take me to some of those places. My son who was in India a couple of years ago also recommends Pushkar and Diu (in Gurjarat) and I will probably go to the place I mention in my post to your SS blog. |
