Travel mate for a India trip around Nov -Dec 2005

Hi
Am a 24 year old Indian(female)..looking for a travel mate to go on a trip of southern India.i have travelled extensivle in the Himalayas..just recently moved to south India(Bangalore)..have already done most of the 'touristy' thing here but now am interested more in exploring the ones NOT necessarily on the 'must see' list..absolute necessity-infinite patience and abundant sense of humor..which is of utmost necessity while threading through the CHAOS that is India( read that as opressive weather/ unreliable schedules and more unreliable guide books )))

hey guys,

will be travelling to kerala somewhere 2nd week june with some friends....how about u guys? I guess we might start with south kerala, did plan to hire some bikes, but then decided against it, as public transport seems to be the best way to get into the skin of the place....n theme for us going down (yes we have a theme!!! ) is to discover some traditional Indian liqour.... though there are different forms, some I guess is called "Kal", which is actually extracted from a fruit or something....not really sure....i heard just to watch the whole way preparing the drink is just as exciting as gulping some....

moreover later during the year (though not sure when) I'm really interested in travelling east, one part of the country i've never seen....any inputs on that?

Cheers!

P.S. I've just moved to bangalore myself, what is really a good idea on weekends here....apart from pecos and koshys and F-bar, and Spin, etc, etc. getting a bit monotonous.... ANything really 'Bangalore' to do out here??

Crossing paths

I'll be travelling from Mamallapuram to Chidambaram to Kumbakonam, Ooty, Mysore Dec 5 thru Dec 18. I visited south India in 1972 (I was 25). I'm looking to re-visit the Pondy ashram and some more out-of-the-way places. the main reason for my visit, though, is to have an authentic Masala Dossa w/ coconut chutney and sambar sauce. Perhaps we could do lunch.

Talk Mr Seshadri at Care adventure. They organise weekend adventure trips to many getaways from Bangalore. You may enjoy some of them. Also can check with IM members lonelyaztec or natasha for tips on travel around Bangalore, they are avid travellers around Bangalore.

I am retired . But you can ask me questions on Gokarna (thinking nostalgically )

www.careadventure.com

(if you looking for weekend getaways from Banaglore, suggest you open a new thread with that titles rather than asking questions here)

Plain Dossa?

Isn't that like a hamburger without the meat? kidding. The truth is my first and only dossa in India was plain. An Indian who couldn't really speak the language of Sravanabelagola ordered it for me. I had no idea what I was getting. I never saw dossas again until years after I got back home. A Kenyan family who had never been to India made the best. Now, I want to see if they really have the masala type in India. As for Gokarna, it's a long way. I must have driven by back in 72 from Mangalore to Goa.

hello kongkona,

i have been working/studying in south india for the past 3 yrs. so here r some places that are off the tourist books which u might like. come to kerala, lots of good places here. near calicut itself u can go to kappad beach, where vasco de gama landed. then u can go to mahe beach ... about 3 hrs away from here. it has a small island, a flat beach, black crabs, dense coconut forests and the wind and water blowing in ur face ... absolutely wonderful :-). there are also some houseboats in which u can spend around 2 days (try to go with friends otherwise it might be a bit exoensive). then there is a wonderful fort also near the sea. ..... all these were places near calicut and close to the sea. if u want to go into the interiors .. try out these following places:
tushargiri waterfalls (my fave) - in wayanad district, but only 50 kms away from calicut. there r 3 waterfalls, and u have to trek straight up to get to the 3rd n 2nd waterfalls. the path is via some of the most dense forests u will ever see. the 1st one is at the base of the hill. and at the 3rd waterfall, the water forms a big pond at the base of the falls - perfect for a dip :-). then there is vythri resort in wayanad. actually the roads in these places r so beautiful that u will enjoy the jourbey as much as the destination. for long trips, u can go from calicut to munnar, kodaikanal and ooty. just make sure that u travel during the day so as to enjoy the really really beautiful views. of course, u will find other tourists in these places but there r many where u can go trekking in these hill stations.
if u wanna see pics of any of these places, just ping back. i will post the links for them here. now u advice me on which places to go to in the himalayas . i will be free for 2 months (march/apri). any location - india/nepal/tibet/bhutan, etc.
happy travelling :-)
