Strange..

you know.. I have seen many messages on thorntree, people asking for travel companions and such and I have often wondered.. isnt it dangerous? I mean..I for one wouldn't like to travel with someone unless I knew them. I would of course be willing to meet up for coffee and such..if they wanted, but I don't think I would travel with them unless I felt at ease with them.

I noticed that too and wondered about it -- not so much from the safety aspect but more as a travelling thing. I've always enjoyed the camaraderie on the road, almost always leaving home on my own and finding serial travel partners along the way. Occasionally, friends from home have asked to go along on one of my winter trips, get excited in planning etc, then back out at the last minute. On a couple of occasions where I have travelled with friends it has been a pain -- in effect, I become a tour guide and feel the necessity of apologizing for every ****roach, inconvenience, or discomfort. Much better luck with people I've met and hung out with who happen to be going the same way -- I can't really imagine why anyone who has travelled much would: 1. seek a travel partner on the internet or 2. respond to someone who is looking for same.

I always end up traveling solo to India all of the time but sometimes I would like to actually go with someone. Most of my friends wouldn't even think of going. I have even made the offer of "I will pay for your ticket" but still no one will go. It's usually like "why don't we just go to the Bahamas" or something like that.
Many times it's just "I can't take off of work that long".

The thought of meeting someone off the internet may be strange, but sometimes you may bump into someone in your hometown who shares the same interests.

travel companions

Some people like to travel alone, I agree that there is nothing worse than someone who complains at every difficulty but is is nice to share the good times and the bad with someone of a like mind, even though these people are few and far between. Most of my friends will only travel if they have anair conditioned coach to pick them up at the airport. But hey, where is the fun in that!

sometimes....

well, sometimes while travelling you may bump into someone doing the same route and may want company too, that would probably be the best way to find a travelling partner other than your own friends who may not want to come along. but via the net it would be better to meet up for a cup of coffee or make contact and see if you are compatable travelling partners!

Cool Travel bud's

I spent four & a half months in India back in winter 99 i flew out on my own and the amount of people that i met up with and travelled together with for say a week or so at a time was amazeing, i think that you would be supprised at the amount of solo travellers that are running around India at any one time.. And you all ways meet up with folks who have the same destination etc, i don't agree with trying to find somebody to travel with off the net as on Trains etc they try and book all the Europeens into the one carrage or at least as many as they can at least that was what i found .... you just should take it as it comes.....

Travel lightly......

yes

all these things are true. i've travelled alone a few times but always met up w/good people & some i ended up travelling with. sometimes it's nice to be independant, sometimes most people need some company ov a similar background to share expeeriences, observations etc. the point about safety is well made however. i posted on the LpTT if anyone had heard ov the book about Charles Sobraj, more to see if anyone had some comments in regards to the general level ov safety in trusting the 'helpful stranger'specifically in india.
