South India in November-December 2009

I will be traveling in the south of India, namely the state of Tamil Nadu, starting on November 1, when I fly into Chennai, until early December. It would be great to have company on this journey. I intend on visiting the larger tourist centres, but I often like to lose myself in unlikely rural places. I travel on exceedingly little money, having long experience with the peculiar traditions of Eastern European hitchhiking clubs, and stay at the simplest guesthouses (with occasional use of HC or CS), eat at the simplest eateries, and travel in the most simple train classes.

I am 27, male, originally from the USA but based in Europe for the better part of a decade (I divide my time between Finland and Romania). I just finished an M.A. in linguistics, though regrettably I'll be no help when it comes to Tamil.

my name is joscha, i'm a german, 25ys whos living in delhi right now..
i'll be going to goa for an indian wedding until 8th november, from there i thought i could travel the south a bit..
i'm pretty much into the same way of travelling as you are, like getting lost or going for unusual places, low-budget sorts..
so i figured that we could maybe travel some time together in tamil nadu or whereever.. just i might not hit the road till end of december, maybe like 1 or 2 weeks..
so i could join you starting from 9th or 10th, as you prefer.. do you have an idea where you might be staying then?

looking forward to receive your reply.. eager to travel the south a bit, best with some company cause when traveling to rajasthan it was quite strange being a white guy alone amongst people who might rip you off constantly..

I've been based in Chennai for a while and would be happy to meet up sometime while you're here. About travelling, since you plan to be around till early December, if you want to fly out of Mumbai after spending the last few days in Pune/Mumbai, we could combine travel plans. I plan to head from Chennai to Pune around 27th November, but can postpone this by a couple of days if you like. I travel sleeper class and at the moment there are quite a few tickets available.

My girlfriend is from Slatina, Olt, and it would be nice to hear your experiences of Romania, since most of my sense of the country is through her. I freelance as a journalist in Chennai, which means hitchhiking from time to time (though not through country), so I could show you the ropes, Indian style, if you like. Or a run in the countryside on 1st November, if you're going to be game for it the evening of your first day here!
