Solo mama, 2 kids, 2.5 months - wanna meet up?

Not a terribly ambitious trip, but with 2 kids (1 yo boy, 6 yo girl) it seems overwhelming to think of! We will be in Pune October & November, then Kerala for the first 2 weeks of December. I wouldn't mind friends/travel companion, in either place. Daytrips or weekend trips from Pune, then getting from Pune to Kerala, and being in Kerala. I'm a little nervous about getting from point A to point B with a baby on my back, a backpack on my front and a blond socialite 6-going-on-16 flanking my side.

Also - the kids have been known to have weak lungs - I am worried about coughing/asthma and allergies in India? Any insight here?

Any other solo mamas done this? I need some encouragement that it'll all work out beautifully!

A few months ago you refered to being in India with your husband. Isn't he going this time?

If not, leave the kids with him!

This can be a huge problem. I used to suffer from asthma and allergies a lot when I was a kid and I can tell you that if you were to take your kids to Mumbai, Delhi or any other major city in India then the pollution will definitely cause distress.

No, now his work situation has changed and he can't go. My daughter actually wants to go -- and dear husband doesn't have any breastmilk to satisfy the little one anyway! I might have one friend joining me for the first part of the trip to help settle in, which would be great - then I could take my time finding help with the kids from someone I trust. But I'd be thrilled to have some other contacts once there, especially those with kids.

Still waiting for some success stories...

Quite an adventure

Sounds a tough idea. I hope you are doing all the homeworks as required.

- Concrete plan on which place to be when
- Lot of time off at relaxing places
- As much as possible local contacts - Certainly IM members in India can help
- Prepare the elder one a lot, she is going to be your biggest help
- Do a hell lot of research here at IM and ask all the doubts that you have

Use the time from now to the trip begining very well. I have travelled a wee bit with my daugther and hence can understand the challenges. Have you been to India before or to the third world before ? with out without the lil ones ?

All the very best to you.

Thanks, yes, Sudheer, i have been to india & SEA but not with kids. Took my daughter to Mexico at 16 months - she doesn't remember it too much but was great to adapt. Last year for a month in Costa Rica she did amazingly well (not complaining when we did 2 7-hour bus trips one after the other, for instance, or when it rained constantly for a week). Other than that our travels have been in urban US and the European countryside. It helps that she is getting excited. I am preparing her every day with mental images for everything - the poverty, the filth, the beauty, the noise, the heat, the sheer numbers of people... I'm more worried about the little one, who will be just walking, eating everything he sees, and whose sleep patterns are horrendous. Also I imagine he won't be too amenable to the heat, or wearing cool long-sleeved clothing - so i'll be fighting with issues of mosquitoes & sun exposure.

We really won't be travelling much; I think it's important to go slowly and anyway I have a course I'm doing in Pune for November - so I plan to get stable housing for October & November - ideally in a bungalow with a family, so there's a yard (without crap in it) for the kids to play in. We want to try to find some activity for dd to do regularly, she is interested in yoga, Indian dance and drumming.

Anybody have recommendations for comfy housing and a good childminder in Pune near Hare Krishna Mandir Road, Model Colony, Shivaji Nagar ?
