Rajasthan January 17 (2005)
Hi there !
I arrive in Delhi January 16 at midnight. I'll spend 2-3 days there then head for a Rajasthan tour (on my own). Probably Bikaner-Jaisalmer-Jodhpur-Mt Abu-Rankpur-Udaipur-Delhi I've got 3 weeks to spend so I should stay about 2-3 days in each city. I should sleep in average hotels and travel mostly by train (I'll try 2nd class for the fun of it, then Sleeper class...) If anyone wanna join in, you're welcome ! Dixie |

Hi Dixiecd
Welcome to India Mike!! Just a little suggestion on your itinery, which may I add is very well thought out and quite doable as well as giving you a great view of Rajasthan. I see you are going to Ranakpur, take a little time to go and see Kumbhalgarh, the fort is really quite special!! It's really not far from Ranakpur and there's a local bus (you have to change in a quaint little hamlet, the ticket guy will tell you where!!) that gets you there in a couple of hours and the journey is facinating! Happy Traveling ![]() |

Thank you for the info. I wont miss it.
Is Ranakpur a quiet city ? How big is it ? And have you been to Mt Abu ? How is it ? I was counting on these two places to relax a little bit. Oh, and by the way, as I read a lot of negative comments about Jaipur, I took it off my itinery. Am I truly missing something ? Thank you very much for your help ! |

Ranakpur as a city or indeed a village doesn't really exist it's the temple, a few people living off the land and loads of wonderfully peaceful countryside.
I'm not au fait with many of the religious aspects on India but this seems to be a theme with the Jain temples I've visited, they seem to have a passion for building temples in lonely peaceful places. So I think by your own criteria you can really kick back here. Incidently Kumbhalgarh is exactly the same!! Mt Abu is a little different but still worth the effort, even if it's just to compare two of the finest examples of Jain architecture in India. Mt Abu is a little more developed than the above but still holds it's charms. I was unfortunately bed ridden for most of the 7 days I was there (lung infection) but I would never hesitate in recommending this place, there's plenty of walks should you want to escape the "mall" and it's an interesting aside from the western tourist destinations elsewhere in Rajasthan, this is where the Indians themselves come to holiday. The hand pushed "trolley taxis" are a hoot!! Some great food to be had here, shame I had to survive on Amul cheese sandwiches which was all I could mange most of the time. I did have one memorable Gujarati Thali. MMMMmmm. Anyway enjoy what will be a facinating trip!!! P.S. Jaipur has no place on your wonderfully balanced itinery, you ain't missng anything!! I'll leave it at that |
