hi kirstey, i'll also be passing through mumbai(airport)on my way to goa around that same time.i think especially for a first time visitor goa is a great place to get accustomed to india.its the least indian of all the indian states, and there is a lot to enjoy there for someone with your interests... i'm also into photography and will be staying for a couple of months in arambol(north goa)before touring south india with my family... don't have enough info about you to be able to recommend you a place in goa to stay but if you go to arambol or anjuna/vagator area or palolem you will most definitly find some interesting travellers to continue your trip with... many start of their trip in places like goa(or himachal or varanasi)and end up falling in love with the place and staying there until the money or visa run out have a great time om shanti

| Kirstiey, Welcome to Indiamike. The book "Shantaram" has already been mentionned here in IM. I'm actually reading it because has been translated into spanish (to read a book in english is for me a loss of time). Well I must say is better than I tought it was, but is a little tired and sometimes a bit boring. Is probably ideal for Mumbai addicts and of course for Leopold's fans, I prefer Mondegar. Nevertheless I still have 500 pags ahead. I can recommed you a lot of indians books or better, books about India and even about Bombay like: "Love and Longing in Bombay" by Vikram Chandra, "Bombay Ice" by Leslie Forbes or "Evenings at Mongini's and other stories" by Russell Lucas and of course all the books written by Rohinton Mistry. | Hi Kirsty, Nicola, I'll be arriving in Mumbai around the 14th Nov. from Bristol, UK. I'm keeping an open mind as to go where first but my intention will be to head down towards Goa for the beginning of Dec and then on to Kerala and explore the back waters on a houseboat. I'll be staying in the Sally Army Red Shield hostel for a few days if you fancy a few beers and to talk about life! |

Hi there, I'll arrive in Mumbai Nov. the 3rd. and I'm planing to spent some days there. Am not sure whether heading down to Goa for a few relaxing days, or up to Delhi. I'm going to Nepal for at least 20 days (trekking) and will spend some weeks in Myanmar then. Maybe we can meet for a chat, couple of beers in Mumbai. Do you already know where to stay in Mumbai ? I'm a little bit concerned, I arrive at ~3am. Hopfully I'll find a reasonable hostel.. (This is my first trip to India, did Cambodia, VietNam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia the last years) Cheers Manu

My flatmate has just returned from Mumbai and recommended Bentley's Hotel. http://www.bentleyshotel.com/mumbaibusinessdistrict.htm May be a good way to climatise yourself for a couple of days. Just make sure you get a pre paid taxi sorted out for about 500rupees so you don't get scammed by the less reputable drivers outside the airport. Hopefully I can pick your brains on Vietnam and Cambodia over a few drinks!

Thanks, I might check it out for the first night. I usually prefer the low budget hostels. I'll not be in mumbai on the 14th anymore (I'm a bit in hurry on this trip and unfortunately I have not much time to spent in india) If you whana know anything about camb. vietnam, just ask.
