Hi!
I know wat you mean... Last time I was in India we went to Gujerath, and it was great (everything except Diu). In 3 weeks I think we met/saw 5 backpackers/tourists. The peopla was so honsetly friendy and interested and no hassels in the stores. We were in the cities so nothing really peacful maybe but true indian experiance. I loved it. Charlotte |

Fot 20 years now, I am staying the winterseason in Asia. Usually Sri Lanka, last years Malaysia. What I always look for is a room/annexe to rent from locals for some months at a time, because I don't like to hop from one place to another. Instead I explore the immediate neigbourhood. I couldn't find such a place to rent in Chennai and stayed for months on end in a lodge. Does anyone know a room/annexe for rent in Tamil Nadu or Kerala ? I would even consider renting on a years base.

In Tamil Nadu I liked Vellore which is a small rural town with a temple, fort, market, paddy fields, small villages nearby. Nice for cycling around, people friendly and chatty. There are other small towns around the Kumbakonam, Tanjore and Trichy area that are not really touristed where you can watch south Indian life go by.

HI den,
My suggestion is already posetd by Itamar and the place is called Mandu. Its in Madhya Pradesh state. About 100kms from Indore city. You can reach Indore by train and then hire a cab or go by bus to Mandu. To give you a brief idea, Mandu has many historical monument majority of which are in the state of ruins. But still its terrefic. Its not a regular tourist destination, so its quite peaceful. |
