I would suggest having a place to stay already arranged for when you first arrive. I travelled by myself and there were only a few times where I didn't feel safe and they were when I first arrived and had not adjusted. Otherwise, use common sense and you will be fine.

I would agree with Casey - book a hotel for when you arrive so you can take a taxi directly there and relax and get your bearings before embarking on your adventure! I'm doing my trip the other way round (from South up to the North). I'll be in Goa though from mid-December to around mid-January if you might want to hook up.

Hi
I will be in Mumbai from beginning of October for a couple of months. Travelling around from there both North and South. No fixed scheduel yet as I will plan once I reach India.
I definately suggest to have accomodation booked for the first day or two, just to give you sometimes to get used to it.
If you want to meet up in the Bombay I will be there, let me know via PM
Happy travelling!

Dreja had posted this in 2005 and guess must have enjoyed the stay in India.
Beatrice, I just see you in multiple threads - I guess I missed on what exactly is your ittinerary. What kind of places do you plan to visit? Is it only the coast you plan to visit coz the mountains are going to be beautiful in Oct. Suggest check out threads on Kaas and mahabaleshwar .

Also check the smaller towns on the western coast like tarkarl, dapoli etc which are beautiful.

Have a good time in India!
Bike rides - Kashmir to Leh and Sikkim, Jungle safaris - Corbett,Chikhaldara, Kanha and Gorumara. Traveled through MP, Himachal, J&K, Maharashtra, W.Bengal, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Goa, Karnataka, AP . . . Yet feel so New to traveling in India.

I had completely not noticed that she posted this in 2005.

A couple of things-
  1. I bet the friendly IMers did direct you to the thread about meeting travel partners. Its a sticky thread, do not ignore it.
  2. October and a couple of months after that should be good for many reasons.
    • Festivals - Diwali, not sure about dasera and durga pooja which brings in dandiya nights, Xmas, and so on. So keep a close watch on what festivals and what you can do to participate and enjoy them
    • Places to visit- This is going to be a good time to visit in maharashtra as its post monsoons and should be green and pleasant. What are your areas of interests - Trekking, Biking, Beaches, Food etc then. Keep a watch on places that might be of your interest.
    • Plan or search your travel mates in that direction, this way it would bea easier to connect and also have common interests.
