Hi Guys,
I too planned for the same trip in Jun/Jul 08, however, unfortunately I have to go abroad for a business trip and my arrival back in India is not certain. I have a Royal Enfield Thunderbird fully serviced and done up with luggage carrier and relevant spares for the trip. Any one planning later trips please get in touch with me at muthu1963@hotmail.com. Regards |

My thoughts on the Manali-Leh road here : Sleepless in Sarchu : Tweaking the Manali-Leh Highway - not written from the biker perspective , but some useful stuff anyway.

I am considering doing a very similar motorbike trip around the same dates (latter part of July) and am quite flexible. NewTraveller, my hope is to also do something a bit more comfortable than absolute economy but to stick with a budget. I see that you're planning to rent an Enfield in Manali; have you found a suitable business? I'm torn between the classic Enfield experience and the reliable Honda trustworthiness ![]() |

Manali to Leh, you will be needing a car with good ground clearance like a Scorpio. Manali has only small cars for local travel for hire. So Delhi or Chandigarh is the best bet.

) it is really tough to get a cheap self drive rental car, unless of course you are in touch with people who provide cars to companies for lease. Otherwise it’s a costly affair; in fact you would be better off taking your own car to Ladakh or hiring a car with driver and then bribing him to let you drive it. One of my friend took his Baleno to Ladakh in May-June, you can read his Ladakh travelogue here |
