Yes i agree Baralacha la is a killer ... i mean the 14kms trek from Batal to Chandrataal is a killer in itself ... imagine 40 odd more kms to Baralacha la ... please plan very very carefully !!

Batal to Chandratal seems like a breeze after...wait till you go to Tokpo Gongma...! and when you have to cross that nallah (a glacial river). My worth...also another reason why it is a killer is because there is a lot of 'moraine' trekking...extremely irritating and tough on your knees and toes....and absolutely no scenic beauty (arguable for some).

Phreaker and Abhi Trekker,

The trek from Batal will take 4 days. You can/should stay for one day at Chandratal at the minimum...if not more. From there its 3 days. At Chandratal, in tourist season, there is some food and shelter (temporary) available. After Chandratal, you are all by yourself...and the trek will become very lonely.

About the river crossing, camp at the river the evening you reach there. Then, cross it early next morning.. (its still an ordeal). There are no specific perils apart from this, but just remember it can snow ANYTIME...and can snow BAD...we had a terrible time due to a blizzard...and some Swedes...who were underequipped just managed to evacuate in time. The last phase of the trek is boring, moraine walking, tough on the lungs and tiring. Remember that you need to have some transport arrangements at Baralacha La ...as there is nothing there....absolutely nothing. Its just high crossroads...but ofcourse there is the Baralacha La board with the altitude...which is what one treks for I guess

Also,

If some one asks me.. you should do the Hampta Pass instead...its more fun and beautiful. One gets the most of both worlds...DO Baralacha only if you are trekking for your record books

Hi Guys!!!

Thanks for all ur wonderful suggestions...
The trek was awesome.. and yes it is a killer. need to be really really fit for it. the streams were challenging.. but real dangerous adventure... i hurt my knee. so had to be on the horse for the last 2 days. but that was surely worse than walking coz the horse is scary when u go down. luckily i crossed all streams with the others on my own feet.
This trek is one hell of a adrenaline rush. do not go if u are a chicken hearted person. and as for me.. i m gonna go again!!! :P

You were rite!!!
IT WAS SLIGHTLY IRRITATING AT THE END.. U CAN SEE THE ROAD.. BUT IT TAKES AGES TO REACH. it needs tremendous fitness.. and will power.. and of course the board helps a lot. your suggestion for Hampta was right too.
Next time i m gonna do both. hamota first and then the Baralacha. that would be some adventure!!!
Wat say?

Congratulations on your success. Waiting to see the pics and revive my memories. One group did what u wanted to do...Hampta and then Chandratal Baralacha...but they were dead by the time they reached Chandratal..so they dropped it.

May be we can trek together sometime...in Sep...i am touring the whole of Ladakh on my bike..solo!

If you are fit and used to cycling (and acclimatized)..then Lamaryu to Leh isn't tiring. Tiring is when you have to cross passed...like Manali Leh ..or Leh Khardungla...or Leh Pangong!
