looking for travel mates in India- from March till June

Hi all,
I'm very new to this site and need some counselling :]
I'm planning to go travelling around India from March until June, but I'm not sure if it's entirely safe to go on my own- that's why I'm looking for someone to pair up with. I'm a very easy-going and open-minded 24-year-old girl from Amsterdam and India's always been my dream place to explore. My itinerary is not set yet, but I definitely need to visit Goa, Delhi and Mumbai, plus I'm looking at spending a lot of time off the tourist track. Since I studied Tourism, I'm not really willing to follow well established, commercialised tourist routes. I'm time rich but money poor, so I'm looking at staying in private lodgings or cheap hotels.
Any suggestions? I'd be happy to get any information on board :]

Well, first your concern is quite genuine and normal. Next you need to specify places for lodging to get help on these.

I am aware of some places in Uttarakhand and a few other places. If you can be a bit more elaborate about locations preferred, it would be easier to answer.

I'm an American who will be in Goa from January till June.
I'm by myself renting a big house only 3 minutes walk from beautiful Vagator Beach. Very safe village area. If you decide to explore this area of Goa
I have an extra room which you are welcome to free of cost to you. The room has two single beds so you can bring a friend if you want.
The house has all amenities hot cold water shower tv microwave and
cooking utensils, and huge garden in the backyard. Very beautiful house near very a very beautiful beach. If you google Vagator beach you'll see pictures of the white sand, blue waters, and coconut palms.

March to June 2010 - whoa, that's a while away! Hard to digest the new millennium's been around that long. And I can't attend the Amsterdam Conference this December. Sigh, sometimes this first-world-third-world thing gets to you...

Private lodgings and cheap hotels are all very well, but as a girl travelling alone you need to be selective, and if you find a travel buddy then doubling up works out a fair bit cheaper. There's a fair CS scene in India too, though, so check that out.

And play the rest by ear, I guess. I'll be travelling around the South in March very flexibly, and May will find me in Varanasi, at least briefly. So in case that suits you and you're ok travelling with a guy, let's talk it over. I'm based in Chennai, and could give you some good ideas on random places to trip off to down South.

gee, that's a mighty kind offer! cliche notwithstanding, if you're in goa prior to new year's, you might want to do 'sunburn' (27-29dec). and if i'm around in the summer, i'll remember to drop you a line and swing by your place. the village setting sounds far out
