Hi,
My mother (who cannot speak english) needs to travel from LA to Calcutta by Singapore airlines around December. If someone happens to be travelling by Singapore during this timeframe, I will appreciate if you could help out. She does not need any other help except getting to the roght gates at transits. Thanks in advance. -Anil Saraogee (anilsara@yahoo.com) |

hi anilsara,
I've just arrived in India via Singapore air, and I don't think your mother should have a problem if you make the airline aware of her situation in advance as they are a really first-rate outfit and are accustomed to looking after special needs. Presumeably you will be on hand to get her on the initial leg of the flight. If her flight has an hour's stop-over in Seoul, as mine did, I'm sure the airline would provide someone to accompany her to the nearby departure gate. If her flight requires an overnite in Singapore, it is a bit more complicated, but do check her main luggage straight through so she is spared the luggage retrieval hassle -- it is only necessary for her to get to the airline's stopover desk where they will provide transport to the assigned hotel and the voucher for the return to airport for the following day. The airline does not provide meals for the stopover, so she will need some Singapore $ as well, but the hotel desk should be able to accommodate so be sure she has a US 20 bill to change, which will be plenty. You don't mention what language your mother does speak, but the airline has multi-ethnic crews and it is possible someone will even speak her language. It would be nice if someone pops up that can help, but I'm sure things will work out fine. I guess you could write a few bilingual notes to cover a few of the possible contingencies as well. m2 |

My grandma (80) travels to US from India (and back) all the time (one a year at least), and she has done it solo right from the first time. She too doesn't speak english.
So, I believe your mother should have no problems during journey. Also, on flights from LA to India, indians occupy almost half the seats, so if she can speak or understand Hindi, she would enjoy the journey. No problems. In singapore airport, she can either get the help from airline personnel, or get help from any of thousand indians she bumps into. |
