motorcycle most prob yamaha RX100. I dont have much experience in leh though i have been till rohtang once on a rented bike, have throughly biked 200 + km per day types in north karnataka for continuously 12-14 months, have been driven a lot in work too....
but still i will have to do a lot of ground work... from whatever i have come across biking is not a problem if you are fit. terrain is really good but roads are bad for back... |

If u r alone on a 100cc Yamaha it’s ok, but if u have a pillion rider as well u will have a tough time. I have done this trip in 2006 on my bajaj caliber with a pillion rider, and i must admit that there were more than few occasions when I doubted the bike's ability to finish the trip!!!

Roads are rough and tough and certainly not good for ur back but any youngman free from any medical or orthopedic problem will be able to handle them easily.
If u r medically fit don’t be unduly worried about ur back. Probably it is the roughness of the road that lures the bikers on the manali leh road. You can expect rhotang to open positively by 2 nd week of June. you can check Official website of Ladhak district administration to know about the road status. |

That’s looks like the navigation of my Ladakh 2005 travelogue
![]() On a serious note, as long as your bike is in good condition, the only thing you might have to worry about is petrol. Especially since 2 stroke bikes can drink heavily if you are riding them in power band most of the time and there will be no petrol available between Tandi and Leh (you can buy in black). As for roads, it would be really fun and it isn't all that tough these days. Hell there was proper road on top of Baralacha La! |

Anurag,
I think you are missing the best part of Ladakh. The places you are going, are rather too touristy... do plan to go beyong spagmik, i.e. chushul - chhagala - loma - hanle - nidar - nyoma - leh etc. if possible, also try to go to kyon tso and chumur.. changthang still holds the true ladakh. my two paisa worth :-) |
