looking for an adventurous and mellow travel partner for 10 day stint Jan 25- Feb 7

I am a 27 year old woman from Ithaca, NY and after spending 2 months in Bombay I am really excited to find some adventures, peace, fun, air to breathe, water to swim in, for my last 10 days in India. I have some ideas but am very flexible and excited to have no schedule and a backpack! Done with my class Jan 25th, have to fly out of Bombay Feb 7th...anyone interested or have some good ideas?

Can you share with the forum on the course you studied in India?

why don't you come down to south and explore the places.

Go for trekking, catamarine ride, swimming in sea etc.

south india

I was thinking of having a few laid back, fun days on a beach and then really wanting to do some travelling in Kerala, especially the backwaters...any more specific suggestions? I was looking for company because sometimes when I have travelled I havent felt completely safe by myself...

You can go white water rating. Its aprox 150 kms away from Mumbai on the highway leading to goa

There are lots of places you can visit around mumbai. Many places would be good for a simple trek, because there are loads of mountain ranges around.

Goa is an over night trip. You could head there. Safe to go alone. (it also saves time spent on travelling)

Alibaug is an hour by ferry, but not much to do besides the beach. The main beach is packed with people on weekdays, but there are a few good beaches around there like 'nagaon' which are isolated. But do not go there alone.

I will be in Malaysia till end of Jan. I should be free from 31st till about 6th Feb. So if you have not planned anything till then & your not afraid of good male company... let me know.

Good luck & take care

Hi becsaway,

I am Jay from Mumbai. I am a computer graduate and have my own computer business. I am passionate about travelling and driving thru countryside. I am driving to Ganpatipule / Ratnagiri / Malvan and vijaydurg fort in feb 1st week. All these are beautifull places on the way to Goa. Also if you like trekking in the mountains then do join me to the trek to Suddhagad fort which is a beautiful mountain fort with huge plateau on the top and great view. You can mail me or message me and perhaps we can meet and plan our schedule.

Thanks and with regards
Jay

hello my names peter i am 45 year old male going to india for first time. arriving trivandurm on 29th jan for 1 month. my only plan really is to probably head for a quiet beach side resort called varkala. i read about it in the lonely planet guide and it felt like a nice place to spend sometime and get my bearings and gain some local knowledge.
be happy to have some mutual support if you felt like it. love and blessings peter.

I read that in their latest edition too yes, and was (perhaps not really) surprised at the description. It was already losing its low-key backpacker's edge when I visited in the early 1990's, and from pics I've seen here it doesn't seem to have become exactly "quieter," rather (many times as) overgrown with guesthouses and restaurants and stuff.

That's not to speak against it & it seems to sit happily on many people's itineraries still (and it might indeed be a nice place to ease into India, and indeed to meet fellow travelers), just don't expect to land in some quiet undiscovered beach place, which it isn't. I'd recommend doing a search for "Varkala" in this site's Photo Galleries and see what you make of it. Note you'll get many pages of hits, that you can scroll around, this is easy to overlook.

On another note & I think LP mentions it too, be very cautious of the sea and its treacherous and dangerous undercurrents here, even if the water looks calm and safe to your eyes. This is true along most of India's mainland coasts, but especially here it seems. Drownings do occur, and too many of them.
