Please gather the recent info about this route before venturing into. I read from a recent newspaper report that the road in this stretch is sinking and the famous Manali-Leh highway will be CLOSED for a year until a new road (bypass) is constructed in those sinking areas. If this is true, then it is real bad news for Ladakh, Rohtang Pass, Lahaul and Spiti tourists.

Just a rumor, in fact I would go as far as to call that a lie. The alternative route has nothing to do with the current route.

Yogesh Sarkar I think you should read the Times of India(22/04) before jumping to your own conclusions about the news being rumours and even lies.Why should anyone want to to spread such a rumour or even "lie" about it??Strong words man.

Check the thread you have started, I have already provided the basis of my belief why Manali - Leh route can not be closed. It's not just another road; it is the life line for people of Ladakh, not to mention too strategically important for the Indian Army.

Ladakh is the only place where India shares border with both Pakistan and China and we all know how good India’s relation with these two countries. This is the sole reason why the alternative route through Zanskar is being constructed with an investment of hundreds of crores; it’s not being built to facilitate “easy access” for you and me!

Any one who believes BRO can close this route without developing an alternative is naïve.

Oh yes, the alternative route is far from being complete, BRO still has to do blasting for roughly 200-300kms. Not to mention build roads and create other infrastructure and this route will take at least couple of years to complete.

I am plng to travel to Leh in Jul – Aug07. And surely the trip is incomplete without the Road Trip thru Leh Manali Highway viz open only few months a year. I am looking for a someone(1 /2 person(s) to share the road trip with me. Do write to me & let me know if you would like to join in.

I am going solo to Leh. I shall hire bike from Leh or maybe manali if Pulars are available in manali.

The manali - leh route is open as of now. My sister-in-law just came back from manali. She visited Rohtang which is open.
So you can say its pretty much first hand info..

As rightly said by Yogesh...this road is LIFELINE of people living beyond rohtang....

Unless there is some heavy snowfall the route is open as of now..
