A lot of people are planning to join the same drive, including me and Vinay. Let's hope it materialises. Then all of us can meet up.
![]() Not too sure about the date when those roads open up. I thought it was June-July. Do you have info on the dates? |

The Manali-Leh highway should open by the end of may. It can open earlier also. I am planning to ride till Rohtang La in April once before the bigger trip...
I hope it opens early as I have to return to work by June 15.. ![]() |

Last year the pass opened much ahead of schedule!
See the link... http://desitalk.newsindia-times.com/...vel36-top.html “The 13,050-feet Rohtang Pass, a popular tourist spot that connects the tribal Lahaul valley and landlocked Ladakh, was opened for light vehicles on April 10,” said the official from BRO, which maintains the high mountain road. Heavy vehicles were scheduled to be allowed on the pass later in the week. The pass generally closes for traffic in late November and opens in early June. Last year, the pass opened May 17. This year it has opened for the first time in April, bringing cheer to the tribal folk of Lahaul and Spiti. Around 30 light vehicles passed in a convoy into the barren and snow-covered Lahaul valley from the green Kullu valley on April 11. |

Thanks for the info. but you know how it is with leave from office and all that. Will have to do major planning ahead of time. Maybe april, maybe July, maybe October. Will just have to check. Do keep us posted once you have been. So we know what to expect.

Take care- May could be too early
Well folks !
May could be too early-this year lot of snow is there on high passes. If you happen to go in this season-make sure you guys are not only and alone..I would suggest, follow army trucks or ahead of them. Incase....they are lifeline on this route in emergencies ! |

Safe Planning Required

I think that you have two ways... 1. Stick to biking to Ladakh: Gather as much information as possible and get ready. If road opens in suitable time bracket-zooooom ! 2. Make a alternative plan: Although Ladakh is ultimate, once I was in a NIKE EXPEDITION to Khardung-La. It was one of my most cherished drive although after that I keep on visiting Ladakh for years ! MY OPINION: As everyone who is climber or trekker -I am also keeping my fingers crossed. Can not say about weather in Himalayas. Heat is coming very very fast in plains of North India. I am having a gut feeling that BRO will open the road which will suit your time frame ! Otherwise-keep a alternative plan handy ! |

Alternate plan is to explore other areas in the Hills mainly in Himachal. Regarding the Manali-Leh route, I have been collecting information for the past few months. Also in touch with a few bikers who did the route last year in June.
I just hope that BRO springs up a surprise like last year when the passes opened way ahead of expectations.. ![]() |

This year its been snowing heavy in upper ranges as well, dont expect BRO to pull rabbits outta hat just like that, IMHO passes will take roughly 10 days extra to open up then usual, unless one feels that manali-leh route is apt to replicate in nat-geo challange style. nothing scary, just be carefull.
