Abid
In ladakh/leh its very very easy to arrange everything by yourself..... we are a couple and arranged the entire tour by ourself with help from Indiamike and other websites like reachladakh etc. 1. first you decide the dates 2. then book the flights to delhi/leh/delhi ..... if you are opting from the road route from manali.... then no need to prebook it.... there will be plenty of agents in manali to do it on the spot. 3. leh is full of hotels and guesthouses. not much bargaining with rates. you can get nice comfortable hotels with all mod cons for 1200 rupees per night.... or perfectly adequate guesthouse... but may be no running hot water for 300 rupees per night. Still .... if you are unsure you can prebook your hotel accomodation.... we had done so. 4. make a list of the places you want to see... the travel agents will often inflate unimportant places..... I have seen itinieries which mention zanskar sangam, magnetic hill etc.... this are places anyway covered during the longer trips... ex you can see Alchi, likir, zanskar-Indus sangam, magnetic hill and gurudwara pathar sahib on the day trip to lamayuru. 5. leh market is full of travel agents.... on the second day take a half day tour of the city (leh palace, shanti stupa etc) and spent time in the market talking to the travel agents. the major trips they will offer are as follows a. day trip to pangong tso b. day trip to lamayuru c. day trip or two day trip to nubra valley (via khardung la) d. trip to nearby monastries like hemis, thikse, shey etc You can book an entire qualis(costly option) or can share the trip with other tourists.... the travel agent will help you find other travel partners. Rates are fixed by the taxi union so not much chance of getting fleeced. you can bargain for max 5-10%they (or your hotel) will also arrange for your permit for a small fee(around 150 rupees per head). 6. The rafting that I mentioned earlier can also be booked through travel agebts in the market place or through your hotel. There is nothing much that you wont be able to do without help of travel agent.... and with very little hassle. So give it a try. |

hey Jayad
it might be a rainy around manali (lower himalayas), but once you get accross Rohtang pass, it should be fairly clear. is that a two wheel drive car that you're talking about. coz if it is then would suggest you to take it easy on the roads. make sure your car is in perfect condition before you venture deep inyo the mountains, also make sure you carry plenty of extra fuel. you can find importand tips in the following link - http://www.indiacar.com/infobank/drv_sep01.htm#car good luck be safe and have fun. |

Hi Javed,
Thanks for a quick reply, I read the article you recommended and it is really an eye opener. We guys were thinking on renting a standard tavera/innova from here, but after looking into the article i feel that we need to look into some thing more professional.. So I started browsing and I found a site www.ladakhtourism.com, I called up this guy Mr Suneel Kumar, and asked him about various options. I also liked their bicycle tour http://www.ladakhtourism.com/trekkin...king-tour.html and enquired about the same, but that would be out of the question now.. as none of my friends are that much into cycling. He asked me to mail the details for a quote.. Can you also suggest some options of car renting - guys who are basically into organizing such tours..I am based in Delhi.. Hoping for a positive reply.. thanks.. jayad |

leh by road ?? how are the road conditions ??
hi !!
wanted to ask if anyone has recently been through the manali-leh ( via rohtang la pass ) road ?? how are the road conditions ?? its not dangerous going there by road right ?? as i was planning on going there on 28th june and some old people told me that those roads were dangerous when they went there , that was like 2 -3 years back i think ... just wanted to make sure that its not really dangerous is it ?? (because maybe the roads might be ill maintained etc. ?? ) thanks in advance |
