Smile January 2010: Karnartaka and Tamil Nadu with a full solar eclipse thrown in :-)

Hey,
I'm travelling to Mumbai to visit a friend, but then plan to leave her and travel slowly south through Karnartaka, Kerala (although i've visited a few places in Kerala before - and would like new experiences), and Tamil Nadu.
There will be a full solar eclipse on 15/01/2010, which will be visible from some areas in Tamil Nadu which i'm EXTREMELY excited about!!
I'm looking for a travel partner for some of this trip - i'll be in India from 1/01/2010 until 24/01/2010.
The thing I love about travelling is meeting people from different cultures, gaining their views about life, and immersing myself in new experiences. I visited India at the beginning of the year - the highlights of my trip were: Pushkar - beautiful town in Rajastan, Ranthambore - National Park, A 5-day trek/camping in Munnar, and visiting a small village in Karangani, staying for a night and eating the best food/meeting locals/playing with the kids.
I work as an Occupational Therapist in London, with people with mental health problems, and have been interested in how the mind works - cross cultural differences/spiritual differences. I would consider myself a spiritual atheist if that makes sense! I'm not looking to visit India to party and meet other party people - although of course if I meet some along the way that's cool! (It's just not my aim) I love reading: Shantaram/3 cups of tea/power of now to name but a few. Also like guitar/music/salsa etc. Oh, and i'm female.
Enough about me - thought it would be useful to give you an insight about the kind of person I am if you decide to contact me about meeting!

Hi,
I now have some vague plans, I am going trekking in the southern Kerala/northern Tamil Nadu area, will also be camping - The guide that I had when I went camping in Munnar/surrounds is free for another camping trek, if anyone wishes to come along, get in contact. My previous experience of this was mindblowing - waking up in beautiful places in nature, being woken by the guide with a cup of tea at sunrise....
ps i'm 33 yrs old, didn't mention that before....also there may be others on the trek.

Hello there!

I'm a 34 year old female from Kent and this will be my first time in India. I'm looking for a travel buddy for at least some of my India trip. I'll be flying in to Delhi on the 27th December and flying home from Goa on the 23rd January 2010. What happens in between is undecided at the moment although I have vague plans to spend the first couple of weeks in Rajastan before heading down to Goa, possibly via Mumbai. I'm pretty much up for anything, I love visiting museums and temples and I definitely want to do some trekking while I'm there. Until I saw your post I was unaware of the eclipse and I'd love to see that (my only experience of an eclipse has been through thick cloud in Cornwall!) I love music (mainly rock, dance and reggae), reading and having adventures - I also make a mean cup of tea!

I'd love some advice about picking a reputable tour guide as I'm new to all this and don't really know where to start!

Thanks, Alice

Hi,
If you're planning to head south to see the eclipse (you can see the exact catchment area if you google 15th january india eclipse) and want to come on a trek around 10th ish january onwards, let me know. I'll probably head further south 6th ish jan from Mumbai. Would you be flying/train/bus from Delhi to south?

Hi,

I'm probably planning to fly south from Mumbai about halfway through my trip which would probably be around that time as it goes. My original plan was to head straight to Goa from Mumbai for a week or so chilling out before heading home.

Whereabouts exactly are you thinking of trekking so I can check out the journey times and see if it's do-able?

Wow, that's such a neat coincidence for both of you! Orchidelic, thanks for the heads-up about the solar eclipse - we seem to have a lot of them lately in India (though the one this summer was up north). Given your professional interests and the fact that you'll be in Mumbai, you shouldn't pass up a chance to meet Dr Udayan - he does psychology, group therapy, the works, and is well known.

Since you've been to Munnar before, it would be worth considering trekking around Wayanad, a northern district of Kerala, and as you say, along the TN border.

For starters, you could read one of his articles online: http://www.tehelka.com/story_main18....ge_30essay.asp.

Your private message access will be enabled once you've sent 10 messages (and been a member more than 10 days), so just one more to go. More on the mail, I guess. I'm glad you're thinking about Wayanad. And Ooty/Kodaikanal would be fabulous, also a good option while switching between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, but make sure you book the toy train for Ooty well in advance, otherwise you'll find it booked out, especially on the weekends. That's a trip I've been meaning to make for years now and somehow never ended up doing so.

It's going to be an annular eclipse, not a total one. Best spot will be Dhanushkodi. They told me about it last year when I was in that neighbourhood. We may go down there to hunt tarantulas, which apparently start acting strange during eclipses.
You can download the path from NASA:

Alice purple - I can't send you a message - apparantly you have to have sent 10 messages before you can send/receive messages. Anyway - hopefully will be able to speak soon re the trek if you're interested. Not long now!!!
