evidentially the train line is going to be under some construction on the 1st february from Jaipur to Udaipur, we will be leaving Jaipur on the 15th february 05, Steven Ber has done a posting on the problem in the trains section and is keeping his eye on the problem.
with this in mind if anyone wants to share a taxi from Jaipur to Udaipur, my wife and I will be leaving Jaipur on the 15th february I'm trying to cost the taxis now. |

Stopping overnight?
davey are you doing it in one hit or overnighting? It is a long way (as you would probably know) and the traffic can be heavy with lots of trucks etc. We were advised 10 hours for the trip. Pls let us know what deal you get as we're back in Jaipur in November and will need a car again.
Make sure you get a newish car. We did not like the Ambassador we saw. Not much legroom and very boucy springs. We had a Maruti Esteem which was great for the two of us, organised via www.jasvillas.com for 4800 rupees for 3 days. Extra miles over 900 we paid for. You need to pay for the taxi to return to Jaipur! Have fun! ![]() |

Lyndy,
Have just received the quote from Namste Tours, you were right about the 10 hrs, christ for 400 klms, they are asking $150Us for a non A/C and $175 US for A/C. I think we will look at the buses, have you any experiences with them that may help? |

Buses in Rajasthan
gday davey-road travel in India is unlike anywhere else in the world I've experienced!! In reality, it is not all bad, but is a bit frightening until you relax and enjoy the ride! (Easy for me to say, now)
We took a RSRTC bus from Agra to Jaipur for 137 rupees. It was an express bus, safer than a car & driver imho, after our car trip Jaipur to Udaipur. However the trip took 5 hours for 230 kms. We fronted up to Agra bus stand and bought a ticket for the next bus, one hour in advance. Allocated seating and one rest stop at a good cafe with clean dunnies! All computerised booking service! Do a google for Rajasthan Government Bus Service. My Footprint guide say there are long distance buses from Jaipur (Sindhi Camp bus stn) to Udaipur taking 12 hours for 230 rupees. You'd be best to book the bus when you arrive in Jaipur. phone number is (141) 2375834 for deluxe buses or express buses (141) 2363277. You could ring from Delhi or Agra or wherever you are before Jaipur to make certain of availability, if you're worried about certain dates etc. I would not pay US150 for a taxi to anywhere in India unless I was going to miss my international connection! Cars (as opposed to vans) usually cost around 1300-1800 rupees per day incl driver's expenses, that's what I was quoted from other sources including Footprint published June 2004. Good luck and let me know if I can help further. Are you staying at jasvilas in Jaipur? They could probably organise a car much cheaper, for you however I think you might need to be a guest as they are not specifically a travel agency. Happy days! |
