Hi.

I plan to visit India next month, for about 2 weeks, or so

Flying into Delhi on August 6th.

My schedule is open, but I am hoping to visit places like Mumbai and Chennai. Maybe Bombay

Would be more fun if I had a travel companion

Cheers ))

LOGAN, Mumbai and Bombay are the same place actually. And, are you coming to india on a business purpose ? The places you have mentioned are only metros and are not strictly speaking tourist spots.... And for these places, you would not need a companion... They are already teeming with people

What tatakol said above is absolutely true! If you need help with places to visit around mumbai ... I can recommend a few but well, in August, Mumbai is likely to be quite wet (monsoons) and clogged with traffic! On the flip side, Chennai will be fairly hot and sunny!
Some of my ramblings!

India next month (August)

I'm heading there for summer vacation

I've heard about the rainy season in Mumbai. I love rain, so that works for me

A rainy summer vacation? I think you might find Goa mor einteresting in that case! SOme days it might be dry and you could enjoy the beach, while on rainy days, you can go off to the hills and trek amid the forest/waterfalls. Also you will find quite a few foreigners in Goa (although most stay away at this time of the year but you will still always find a few!)

The only downside to Goa is that they do not have beach shacks during monsoons but you will definitely get some massive discounts in nice hotels facing the sea/beach

Yes, a rainy summer vacation.

We dont get much rain here where I live, so rain is welcome

As for tourist spots.........I prefer to avoid them completely. When I travel, I try to immerse myself in the local culture.........local spots, local cuisine, etc, and interaction only with locals.

Sorry, Bladelogan, if i offended you, An explanation is in order.

Rajnikanth is a actor in south indian (tamil) movies. and he is a well known hero, fearless in the face of difficulties that would kill an ordinary man.

And blade in local parlance is something sharp that can be used to cut your enemies. So Blade logan would be a very appropriate name for a movie character played by Rajnikanth.

Many movies here use such titles to potray/convey to the public that their movie is good, and their hero is sharp.

and since you seem to be fearless in the face of mumbai monsoon, i thought it appropriate handle for a hero such as you. Someone who hears about the mumbai monsoons, and says "pooh.." in the face of all that water.

No offense meant. And by god, immersion it is for you. mumbai is famous for waterlogging..at least to the non locals. and when the trains stop, life almost stops...or atleast takes a breather.

Thank you for the explanation.

No offence taken.

I am not as brave as that Rajnikanth.......but, what you describe sounds like a fun-vacation. I think I'll try it.........

Thats quite an explanation adam!

@bladelogan - If it is Mumbai then I will be happy to help you out with the usual pubs etc and spots around. There will be loads of people around... a real crush (its unofficially the most populated city in India I think! although officially I believe its still Kolkata)

As far as interaction with locals is concerned, well, you need to be keep in mind who you would like to interact with. Some might not understand English, others might turn out to be greedy, some might be crooks, while some could be pretty awesome! If you have a specific group of people you would like to meet, I could point you in the right direction.

For instance, perhaps you might be interested in interacting with students? or sportsmen? photographers? artists...

or maybe you just wish to walk around observing everyone go about their daily business. If that's the case then the usual cautions in a mega city apply.. keep your passport stashed away in a safe deposit box (in the hotel) as also most of your cash and valuables, before you start stalking the streets

Bladelogan, personally, i amnot sure if rajnikanth, the man, is brave as he seems to potray in his movies. But then again, i am not privy to his affairs.

But then again, come the time, comes the man.

And the telugu film industry has a one-up on me, they already were out with a movie titled "Blade Babji".

Or you could keep your valuables in a small bag, suspended around your neck, and towards the front of your body. there are other threads/posts on safety in india, you might be better served reading them.
