A good option is take a train to Ambala and hire a car there. T(Check erail.in, a 3 hour train ride, and probably an hour from Ambala, around 50km.)
If not... Suggest hire a car at Haridwar but be aware you will have to pay for its return. I don't know the exact distances, but guessing around 150/170 km one way Haridwar to Kurukshetra. One could go via Ambala, I guess, probably better roads, but it looks like there are some roads directly to Pipli and on to K. Either way, even if you pay for around 400km, you should get a small (for seater) airconditioned car for around 3000 rupees, including return. Look here for a general idea of direction http://www.mapsofindia.com/driving-d...tions-map.html (Kurukshetra is just West of Pipli, as this link below shows. The road through Ladwa maybe the one to take, but not sure). http://www.mapsofindia.com/maps/hary...urukshetra.htm There are buses, but I wouldn't really advise those. http://hartrans.gov.in/roadways/time...asp?start=2226

Thank you for your response.
I think this is going to take me longer then I had allowed. For obvious reasons have to go to Pehowa (in Kurukshetra) after Haridwar |

Pehowa is about an hours drive from Ambala. Take a train to Ambala from Haridwar then can hire a cab or take bus to Pehowa which are readily available. Buses going to Jind, Hisar and Kaithal cross Pehowa. Pehowa lies on NH 65 from Ambala.

There are direct daily buses from Haridwar to Kurukshetra/Pehwa.

I hope you know why somebody undertakes this particular trail.... Just give the info that he has asked, he is not here on a holiday trip....

I guess the OP doesn't need this anymore, but for the next person:
Ambala is the wrong place to be going to get from Haridwar to Kurukshetra or Pehowa, regardless of means of transport. By road After Yamunanagar, the road continues straight to Pipli (yes, via Ladwa), from where it's a short hop to Kurukshetra or Pehowa. It is reported to be in good condition. This wud be the route for a car to follow. In fact Y'nagar to K'shetra is around 50 km, while via Ambala it's exactly double. There are any number of buses a day from Haridwar to Pipli and Kurukshetra operated by Haryana Roadways, also a few to Pehowa (altho one goes the long way via Ambala). Also plenty of buses of HR and UPSRTC to Yamunanagar, from where other buses are available. Uttarakhand Transport shud also be having buses into the area, but their schedule is not available online. Of course these are all ordinary buses and as suggested, while gaining something pocket-wise, one gives up on comfort. By train Even by train the right place to get off is Jagadhri, the remaining road-distance to Kurukshetra being around 55 km. Going to Ambala wud add at least another 40 km. Dilliwala is right. pretty good Haryana Roadways buses, good road and 180 KMs (Hrdwr-Phwa) you will get seat. No need to go to Ambala. Hrdwr>Yngr>Pipli>Kkr>Phwa.

What I actualy did
The owner of the Hotel where we stayed booked a car for us for 2500 Indian Rupees that would drive us to Pehowa and then on to Ambala. We had already downloaded the maps of the roads that we needed to travel along and showed them to the driver so there was little chance of us getting lost as the roads are all well sign posted. This was the only way to get to Pehowa well before night fall after the ceremony in Haridwar that took place in the morning.
I would say hiring the car is the only means to reach Pehowa before night fall and it should have cost be about 1800 Indian Rupees Many thanks for all the replies and i hope this helps other's who may have to make this journey |

It's a place were certain religious ceremonies are performed. I recall the large university/collage buildings and a large number of students.
Traveling along the road approaching Kurukshetra was a bit of a nightmare, there driving beats any fair ground ride. Should be visited if you have the time or passing by but would not recomend making specific plans to visit Kurukshetra it is not along the beaten track |
