Far as I know (haven't been there yet, be will be there on New Year's eve).... the nightlife are good at anjuna, vegator, baga / calengute where mostly backpackers hangout, maybe some ravers and stonger out there and don't know how "clean" it would be... but surely nicer than the beaches of northern france
the real "clean" beaches i guess would be in south goa, be all the resorts. hope that helps and see ya there!will

The beaches in South Goa are patronized by older tourists(over 40) generally speaking while North Goa beaches are more popular with the younger and more wild crowd.

Hmm, thanks...
So Arambol and/or Calangute could be a good bet for this 38-but-behaving-as-25 first-time Goa visitor? I'm planning on getting there next Thursday the 21st ... any recommendations on where to stay (I'm on a sub-150 budget)? Cheers, M Btw, any IM get-togethers or hangouts in Goa? |

We are thinking to stay at Goa in the North or in the south. I am 42 years old and travelling together with my wife (low budget backpackers). Who can recommend us a good and clean (but not too expensive) room (hotel/guest house/bungalow....) for around 500 Rps. In Anjuna and in Palolem. Are maybe some other places.....
Thanks |

Palolem for over 40s
If you stay in Palolem , which in much recommended as it is far less overbuilt than the north, there are lots of places in your budget range although they are not very posh. Try Oceanic a little back from the beach and there are lots of very nice bamboo hut rooms right by the beach. Ciarans camp is very popular and there are some really nice new hut/ rooms near there. If you want something really quiet and on a not busy beach, try Patnem Beach the next beach south of Palolem. There is a great place called "Home" which has nice rooms and great food right on the uncroeded beach. For an even quieter tranquil place try Agonda Beach , just north of Palolem...beautiful and unspoiled. Dunhill Resort has lots of nice clean rooms in the 500r range and there are a few good places to eat in the area. It is only a 15 minute ride by scooter to Palolem. There are 3 other places and all have nice rooms for the price you want.We have lived in Palolem, Patnem and are in Agonda this year and we prefer the quiet there. And the closeness of Palolem and Chaudi for supplies and entertainment.

I guess it depends what kind of nightlife you are into....the trance scene is (supposedly) pumping north...born in anjuna...pieces in baga etc....

Anjuna is way more expensive when compared to Palolem but has its advantages like better nightlife, restaurants and other facilities. You should be able to get decent accomodation for less than Rs 500 in Palolem but keep in mind that you won't have too many bars/restaurants to choose from. You will also have to shell out quite a bit to travel from Palolem to other parts of Goa. Palolem was really beautiful and quiet when I first visited in 1990. No hotels, huts or guesthouses of any sort. Just a few tents. ![]() |

Have a Meal in the Green lantern (palak paneer) Tell them your looking for a good cheap room. Go to the Fruitsallad place under the Banja Tree. Have the Fruitsallad and make sure you get some of that CHICKU fruit lasie. Go to 9 Bar in Vagator... Ask where the REAL partys at... "3 days?" You need a month my friend. The rave must go on. full power no shower 2 4 hour. Be careful. Do not be paranoid. To much 4 ya? Go to Arambol. To much for ya? Go to Palolim. And remeber to N joy the ride. ![]()

Update from Goa (October)
Observations fro the last two weeks. - Colva is fairly quiet but pleasant - Benaulim is pretty much deserted - Anjuna is a bit busier than Colva and is very nice. Paradiso has parties on Wed and Sat nights, great venue too. Bungy jumping hasn't opened for the season yet. - Palolem has more visitors than the others put together. Many restaurants to choose from and excellent seafood on offer. In all these places, restaurants, shops, stalls etc are re-opening for the season and you'll notice a new one every day most likely. Still very early in the season of course. As for getting around from Palolem, there are half hourly buses to Margao. I caught buses to get to Palolem from Anjuna (Anjuna - Mapusa - Panaji - Margao - Palolem) cost a total of Rs.48. That'll hardly break the bank.
