Seriously though, if you're into architecture why do you want to visit Chandigarh? The city is based on the American grid system design so may be familiar to you. Although the rock garden is interesting...

hey:
i find few places interesting that might be right up your alley.... i can see why you want to visit chandigarh...looks like you are coming south up to ellora and i dont know if you have plans to come further down... anyway, near delhi, fatehpur sikhri (completely preserved planned city from mughal period and was abandoned possibly due to lack of water supply) i love a lot of small towns in tanjore area in tamil nadu that are very similar to medieval europe in layout with narrow maze of lanes with temple tower replacing church steeples as landmarks for findign you way thru the towns. new delhi itself is very similar to washington dc in its planning, especially those radiating thoroughfares. a lot of rajasthani towns with towering citadels on hills in the middle looking over the buildings down below are straight out of arabian nights. hampi is another town in ruins that people love to visit...its in karnataka and not unreasonably far from ellora. ofcourse there are tons of individual building masterpieces that dot all across the country... kerala has its unique architecture based on wood and terracota tile construction...chettinad area in tamil nadu has a great traditional architectural style. i'm brain dead for now....may be more later. cheers! |

For an interesting blend of architecture and science the observetory at Jaipur shouldn't be missed, There are five of these but I believe the one at Jaipur is the best preserved!!
The Delhi Municipal Council in their wisdom concreted over a lot of the observtoery there!! |

Yeah, im sure its very uninteresting to the non architect, but it is one of the more studied cities in the world. Le Corbusier, the architect and planner is considered one of the most influencial architects of the last 1000 years. If not the most influencial. All of the current buildings you see poping up around the world have been heavily influenced by Corbusier.
The city is widely considered a failure in architectural circles. I know its hard to understand but that's fascinating to me. And just the fact that i can tell my architect friends i went is worth the visit, they will be so jealouse. |

Sorry you took that the wrong way man , i was merely responding to an earlier persons comment. I hardly meant it to be snobbish, its just that most people I know have told me they find the city 'plain'. I can understand why, i didn't have the least bit of interest in the details of chandigahr until my proffesors beat it into me. |

im already over it. I just vote for people who loose and watch the imperialist, military industrail economy roll on and enforce its 'wisdom' across the globe. Ill experience prejudice and in some places i travel, extreme anger. All for a governments actions of which I stronlgy oppose.
I love my country, its amazing! im very sad about the state of afairs in the world and how my government is conducting itself right now though. On that note, I stopped being an activist a year ago. I like the Yogi's philosophy better. |

I agree with somewhere above, get down to hampi and explore karnataka, well just head south. Watch out for rain!
I agree with you completely on your political stance but personally since I, like you, still love my country i dont flash another countries logo thinking people will perseive me differently. From my travels people love Americans over there a lot, and many understand that the country is very split right now on politics. In a sense so are they, i talked with many people who backed Bush completely because they fear terrorists, yet i encountered the opposite opinion as well. They'll look at you for who you are, not your country. Except ill be in Bangladesh this summer and someone on IM said Bangladesh "might not even let me in" since im American. I think he speaks for himself but i guess we'll have to see. Actually another funny story is that i read in an English language paper in India about when Bush told the New York Times not to print some story about the war a day before it came out in the states. O well im rambling anyway...you'll have some good political conversations over there have a blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I'm a Thatcher loving right-winger who thinks we had to go into Iraq, (but won't be discussing this further in this thread), yet my closest friends are left wingers, we learn a lot from each other.
