chennai in december

Hi to all!

I'm finally traveling to India after so many years of waiting. From what i've read on this site i'm sure you all understand my joy
I'll be going to chennai but i still havent got an itinerary. Anything in the south, around chennai would be good. I'll be travelling alone so if any girl likes to join me, i'd be very glad.
So ,

is there anyone traveling to chennai or in the area in the first 3 weeks of december?

ps. does anyone know where i could take bharatnatyam lessons?

Hi,
December is a good time to visit Chennai.. neither hot nor very cold. For bharathanatyam classes, you have many options in and around Chennai. The one I know is Kalashektra which is located in Besant Nagar. Not sure, how much they charge and all that stuff..

have a good time in south India.

cheers

Chennai is never not hot, and the word cold does not exist there! But December should be nice.

Mid-December to Mid-January is the time of the annual Music Festival. This year will be my first time for being there throughout the period, but you will have a choice of dozens of concerts every day. Dance is there too, though perhaps more in Jan than in Dec.

I don't know if you can just wander into Kalekshetra for a couple of weeks: it is a top school and probably quite hard to get into as a full-time student.

The city is bursting at the seams with musicians, dancers and teachers. Whether the 'Season' will give them time to teach a visitor I don't know.

Have you been learning Bharatnatyam before?

I will be there at that time, although likely to be a bit busy ---but if you haven't found anyone beforehand I'll try to help. Errr.... you might find that the better teachers are quite expensive to foreigners!

i've only learnt bharatnatyam for 2 months but i'm going to start again soon. I'll try kalakshetra...at least to find a teacher for next long visit to India.
Where is this festival happening? where exactly could i check for concerts and events? and what else can i do in chennai?

Have you got a teacher you are still in touch with? Best to ask her/him about their contacts in India.

Everywhere. Just Everywhere! For information you could start with Kutcheribuzz website. They will, as time goes by, publish the schedules of all the major sabhas (music organisations) so you can start planning before you even get there.

...or else check out The Hindu newspaper every day.

You will have the chance to see most of the greats, never mind whether they have government-awarded titles or not! Also some will give Lecture Demonstrations. (although I don't know what language these tend to be in)

Coincidentally, I noticed a few minutes ago that Alarmel Varli is performing at the Trivandrum Navaratri festival next week!

Mutu: you another Bharatnatyam/Carnatic music fan?

Well... Kind of...
I really love to see Bharatnatyam dance. Last year I missed A. V. in Trivandrum at Soorya Dance Festival but I had the chance to see her in Germany this year! She's a real Diva. ;-) But her dance is impressive.
I also love Indian music but I don't know much (well... nothing) about it.
I love the rythm of the tabla and the sound of the sitar.
