Women choose trousers over saris

A survey of Indian women's preferred daily clothing has shown that more female professionals are choosing trousers over the traditional sari.

The study results show that sales of women's trousers have surged by almost 10% over the last two years.

I think it has more to do with the rise of women riding 2 wheelers in India. Ever tried that with a sari?

Another reason is that trousers discourage the road-side romeos from indulging in bottom pinching.

The total number would not be more than 2 or 3% (when at its peak), because those women who are choosing pants over sair are those who have high education, are not too <opposite of slender>, have great hi-tech jobs, or those women who have travelled outside of India. And in big cities only - thats for sure.

But change is welcome... however small/big...

I'm not surprised that the BBC has a bad reputation with some people when it publishes such drivel.

I liked the caption to the pic: The sari is still overwhelmingly worn by women. Well, yes... a few men wear them, but that's something else!

sales of women's trousers have surged by almost 10% over the last two years. 10% in two years. Some 'surge'. And 10% of a very small number to begin with?

It also shows that women are going in for more expensive brands. So definitely the ordinary woman on the street then?

Middle class women are turning away from the sari. This is the caption to a pic showing a number of women ---all wearing saris.

I wonder if this 'study' (and my quotes are meant to be especially cynical ones) was commissioned by a trouser manufacturer?

That caption made me laugh, too!

Saris are fantastic for special events, or when one feels like dressing up on a particular day, but I can't imagine wearing one more often than that. That's where a salwar kameez comes in.

Nick the article was ABOUT professional women not the ordinary women of India, which incidently are also changing their dress code slowly!

The article is valid, there is change afoot try hanging out in Connaught place or Khan market in Delhi and look at what is going on (I'm sure this repeated elsewhere) I saw almost no one of the new young proffesional female set wearing a sari!!
All were very smartly dressed in well wouldn't you know it TROUSERS this extended to many middle class women I saw in Khan market

Perhaps you should get out more!!

It is headed: A survey of Indian women's preferred daily clothing. It doesn't say "professional". Reading on shows, that you are right: it obviously applies to a small, professional, wealthy sector.

The temperature is dropping now, so I probably will start to get out more!

Here in Chennai there are still plenty of sari wearers. But there are also plenty of salwar kameez wearers and, mostly among the young, jeans and tee-shirt wearers with just the occasional youngster in a half-sari. At least that was the situation last time I went out!

I still say the article was drivel

What's a half-sari?

I'm an old fogey. When in India I shall wear the "toga". That should discourage roadside romeos. I mean who is going to try to pinch a lady wearing sari, glasses, hair in a bun (specially if I don't colour it and let the grey show...), red in her hair parting and big red dot on her forehead. Also I'll carry a big black umbrella and wear a cross expression.

'I don't think the saris will ever go out of style.' That is what a woman told me in Keralla.
She said it is too easy to wear and you can hang on to it a lifetime.
Several working women have told me they prefer to wear the salwar kameez when travelling or when working, but they still have lots of saris in their wardrobe.
The western media might have a great influence in India now-days, but I still don't think a sari will go out of style. Maybe there will be less women wearing it, but there will still some who will wear it with pride.

I doubt very much whether the sari will go out of style! As it shouldn't it's a very elegant piece of clothing!
I wonder though will the younger generation give up their jeans an t shirts as they get older.
Certainly the young professionals I spoke of earlier looked very comfortable in their new trouser suits!
Perhaps we may see the sari becoming more of a dress item rather like the dresses in the west what do you think!

i think the sari is beautiful. but its always nice to have a choice. many of my friends went to sri lanka last summer they all picked up saris, and have worn them to loads of events. they are gorgeous, i plan on picking up a few, not sure if im brave enough to wear it in india though, might be a little too hot. a girl in my town just came back from a month in india alone. she said that she did not experience any 'eve-teasing' and she wore skimpy western clothes all the time. i thought maybe it was because she is very skinny, and the indian men didn't like this. i dont know.
anyway, i think its great if indian women can choose to wear whatever they want. they may want to wear toursers one day, an sk the next and a sari going somewhere at night.
