Where to spend a lone Christmas
Hello!
I'm going to be leaving to go to India for a few months in December. I'll be travelling on my own, and i'm just trying to plan Christmas. I'll be travelling on a budget, and don't want to be completely solitude. I've heard i'll need to book so i need to think about where to spend christmas. What are everyone's opinions? Where do you think the ideal place to spend Christmas in India is? Rachel |

Over the years, I've had Christmas in Delhi, Kolkata, Goa, Puri and Ramaswaram.
If you're alone and want to celebrate with other foreigners, choose one of the beach towns, or check into a dorm at a backpacker hotel in the big cities. You won't be the only one travelling alone and looking for companionship.

Hiya, thanks for the great replies.
Goa is clearly a popular choice. I'm just a bit worried it would be full of big groups of drunk teenages which doesn't really suit me. Would all of Goa be like this? Is there a beachy place where I could find somewhere to sleep, and maybe meet a few people to share a quiet meal on the beach with? I was thinking of the Andamans, does anyone know what they're like at Christmas?? Thanks again ![]() |

If you want to celebrate christmas, then any city/area with a Christian population will serve the purpose.
Kerala might be a good choice. |

I had Chritmas in Pushkar last year. Particularly full of the hippy typetourist who didn't beleive in Christmas. The locals tried to have a few Christmas Eve parties but it all just seemed to fizzle pretty early. On the nigh of Christmas day I was on a bus out of town.
Will be doing Christmas alone again this year, hopefully with some other people who can help me forget I'm missing my neices and nephews' exciting Christases. |

I will be alone in India this christmas... my friend is leaving me in Goa on the 21st. Not sure whether to stay there for the christmas festivities or if I would prefer somewhere quieter? We will be staying in Anjuna at least up to the 21st, and I don't particularly want to celebrate with massive beach parties and stuff... would Gokarna or even down to Kerala be more relaxed?

I read Varkala in Kerala isn't too bad for Xmas, it's not really a party place like Goa, but has bars and socializing if you want it, it sounds a bit more relaxed. I've been there before, but not at Xmas. Quite a few hotels/guesthouses seem to do something special for Xmas. I know this because this is where myself and a friend will be spending xmas this year.
If any of you are there for xmas and alone, you are welcome to send me a message and we can meet up, I'm bringing some nice Malborough Savignon blanc with me for Xmas.

kerala
Nick is right. Kerela believes and breathes christmas from the bottom of its soul and the nuns are amongst the most orthodox in the world. A visit to a church in the small towns of kerala is enough. It is electrifying. Gokarna is a seedy place and best not advisable in the new year time. The problems of north goa are well known and need no elaboration.
