Mumbai: Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic Airways has been forced to slam the brakes on its Mumbai-London operations from May thanks to a double whammy of the economic slowdown and excess capacity. This is the fourth international airline in the last year alone to cease operations from the city.
“We have decided to temporarily suspend operations to Mumbai with effect from May 4. We are suspending this service until rational conditions re-emerge and it can resume service on this important route,” confirmed Neha Lidder Ganju, Senior Marketing Manager- India, Virgin Atlantic Airways.

Virgin flights will be resumed in the autumn.

The problem is that BA, Virgin,Jet,Sahara, and Air India offer direct flights between London and Mumbai.

Airlines offering single change flights CHEAPER than the above include Air France, Ethiad, Gulf, and KLM.

Given the intense competition on the route , the global downturn, the Mumbai massacre , and lower passenger numbers in the summer season ,then Virgin has decided to cut its losses.

I was booked on a flight from Mumbai to London on August 8th. The texted and emailed me to inform that flights on this particular route was suspended. After contacting them they booked me onto a BA flight on the same day at roughly the same time at no extra cost. This was after they checked times and availability on Jet and Kingfisher on the same route. Virgin also gave me the option of flying back from Delhi (which is where we fly into). Pretty good customer service I think.
