Victoria Cross hero lives by fair

A fair in the memory of Victoria Cross winner Gabbar Singh Negi concluded at Chamba in Tehri district on Tuesday.
The villagers of Manjood, where Negi was born, took out a procession to commemorate his deeds to the sound of traditional drum (Dhol) on Tuesday. The fair ended with the Garhwal Regiment band beating the retreat. This is the only fair of its kind in Uttaranchal.
Gabbar Singh Negi became a legendry figure after winning the Victoria Cross during the First World War on 10 March 1915 at Nauve Chapelle in France.
Born at Manjood village near Chamba (Tehri), Gabbar joined the 2/39 Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in October 1913. Every year, on his birth anniversary, a fair is organized and villagers from Chamba and neighboring areas participate in large numbers.
