Very Bad News on Pakistan-India Train

Quote:
At least 66 people have been killed in a series of explosions and a fire on a Pakistan-bound train in the northern Indian state of Haryana, officials say.

Passengers reported hearing two blasts as the train passed near Panipat, about 80km (50 miles) north of Delhi.

Already mentioned by someone elsewhere on the forum, but still a valid newsitem.

What this BBC report doesn't mention is that the passengers, for security reasons, were locked in.

Very odd... can't find that thread now.

It seems the target is the Indo Pakistan talks or the 'improving relations' between the 2 countries.

The bomb blasts in Pakistan over the last few days had rung alarm bells in the mind, too.

Oops, I think I clicked the wrong button, I must have clicked 'unapprove' instead of 'approve' (all threads in the news forum have to be approved).

Sorry.

The BBC does mention that some passengers may have been locked in. How absolutely dreadful.

If I remember correctly, the train was/is used for smuggling too. One of the ways is to simply throw the contraband out of the train once you cross the border and then collect payment at the station. Once you collect the cash, you throw it out once again on the return journey for your henchmen to pick up.

This might have been the rationale for locking up carriages. There was a newspaper/TV article about this.

Since this involves border crossing, I'm sure bags are examined BEFORE you get on the train,so it's interesting that this thing happened.

I understand the train slows down at different places, slow enough for people to climb on, hence the additional need to lock doors.

rank speculation, this.

It's funny after first reading the heading of this post I assumed it was a "train to India" but after reading the article, I now realize that it was a "train to Pakistan" .... no matter what country's gremlins are at work - the significance of the transportation medium used in the blast will undoubtedly strike deeply at the nerves of this age-old conflict.

Psychopaths

I saw in the last week that a member of the Red Brigade/Anarchist
terrorist group, the Baader-Meinhof Gang, is to be paroled after many years in prison.

Those psychopaths convinced themselves that murder was good for who knows what. I thought back in the seventies when that gang caused mayhem they were overindulged rich kids.

It appears that disturbed and deluded folk (or governments) anywhere may take up a cult of arson and murder. Seems like the Thuggees of old. I doubt if the motive this time was political.

In an act of arrogance top story on cnn.com is about 3 missing mountain climbers. Nothing about train blast in India on front page!

BBC.com has top story as train blast.

Is US that far out of loop? as far as world events are concerned?
I think George Loony Beans Bush has succeeded beyond even his wildest dreams.

Well, the good news is actually that this isn't a bigger story. There are train explosions and lethal derailments in India more often than you realize. This one only made the news because of the Pakistani connection--but the good news is that there isn't a Pakistani connection and the politicians are not insinuating one. The bombs were gasoline, not military explosives (RDX). No one is suggesting that either government had a hand in the blasts.

This is a far cry from other events in the not so distant past--the attack on parliament in Delhi and on the American cultural center in Kolkata, and the market and train blasts in Mumbai. In this case, as far as we know, troops are not repositioning along the Line of Control, ambassadors are not being recalled, and the phone lines between Delhi and Islamabad are still open.

Yes it is on Yahoo, but CNN is main news organisation, I would have expected them to headline the news, the way BBC did. And the way they done London train bombing.

(correction: Now they have the story as third lead)
