Cop shot dead outside US Embassy

NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police head constable posted outside the US Embassy in the high-security diplomatic enclave on Wednesday died of a bullet injury sustained mysteriously.

Raj Singh posted in the Police Control Room van meant for the protection of the embassy received a gunshot in his chest at around 7.40 am, police said.

Two other police personnel posted in the van remained unaware till they heard the gun-shot sound, they said.

Singh was rushed to a hospital where he was declared "brought dead".

Senior police officials, including the area Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Kumar Meena, rushed to the spot in view of the sensitivity of area.

The shot might have been triggered off accidentally or he might have committed suicide, police said. "An inquiry has been initiated to ascertain how he was shot," Meena said.

According to more recent press reports it appears he shot himself in the head.
