Udaipur, India, voted world's best city in travel poll

The Indian city of Udaipur, known as the "Venice of the East," was voted the world's best city for travelers in 2009 in an online poll by Travel + Leisure magazine.

We absolutely loved Udaipur, and I'm delighted to see it's being recognised.

I must confess that I am slightly surprised to hear it has been voted as the very best city in the world for travellers.

Udaipur has lost it's charm i'm afraid to report. Every roof top has a restaurant, everywhere is a guest house. The lake maybe dried up. More of a tourist trap nightmare to me. Too many tourist too rapid development. I think Pushkar is better. Have a look at my personal best of India picks. No Udaipur's there.
