Kashmir ceasefire 'from midnight'

India says a ceasefire with Pakistan in the territory of Kashmir will start at midnight local time (1830 GMT).

Last Sunday Pakistan offered a ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) that divides much of Kashmir.

India now says the ceasefire will also take in the disputed Siachen glacier area north of the LoC.

However, the Indian foreign ministry said the ceasefire could only become durable if Pakistan stopped allowing extremists into the area.

Pakistan has always denied offering material support to the militants.

These are only the first steps to normality in the region.

Hopefully more moderate voices are being heard from Pakistan but until the actions of various terrorist groups, who have infiltrated from the Pakistani side of the border, are stopped, then there will be no real peace in Jammu and Kashmir. Deeds, not words are needed and Pakistan's denial of actively supporting these groups cuts no ice with most people outside of Pakistan.
