Travel News: They serve so we can enjoy travel.

20 million miles, is a lot of miles These are the folk that make our lives easier. For every surly nightmare from hell, you have a handful of them; unless it is Tarom or Malev..

Quote:
Mr. Akana, 83, has just about seen it all. In his early years, impeccably dressed passengers were served seafood salad and congregated at the cocktail bar on board. But he is also the face of a profession that has gone from glamorous to gray, as more flight attendants work longer than they ever imagined.

More than 40 percent of the roughly 110,000 flight attendants in the United States are 50 or older

63 years in flight

Quote:
Seats were all first class, with four bunk beds up front and a private stateroom in the back with its own beds and bathroom. A circular staircase led to a lower-deck cocktail lounge, and flight attendants prepared hot meals for the 52 to 54 people on board.
Talking about meals... there are still some interesting snacks being served aboard flights to and from India.

Yes, Dorothy, It is on an Amsterdam flight - Yummy Dholkas too

nycank, thanks so much for waking me up to this treat! Indeed, we "stews" all lament those days of glory and civility, what was certainly a glamorous lifestyle, not just a job. I remember (only 23 years ago when I started, at the tender age of nearly 40!), carving chateaubriand in the aisle, champagne flowing freely, and best of all, customers taking pride in looking their "Sunday best" when traveling the friendly skies. This fellow is indeed a classic perfect gentleman, having served other true ladies and gentlemen in his time.

Lovely picture there of your recent snack, looks as if special treats still happen somewhere "on high"! Was that first class or business?

I have always appreciated the flight attendants on my flights. They have been really nice, and always helpful. There was the time I panicked when my bag had been moved and I couldn't find it. They calmly helped me find it, and did it with a smile. And the time I had the wrong flight number on my paperwork before landing into Delhi, the flight attendant gave me the correct number and then waved her arms around said, "What area of the sky did you pluck that other number out of?" Funny! They have made my flights enjoyable, and it has been appreciated.

once i was in BA flight from london to chicago & though i had requested my travel agent for veg meal, somehow that request never reached that leg. but the attendant asked me to wait for some time & got me a nice veg meal from business class instead. it was really very good, so thank you unnamed lady for ensuring i don't die of hunger on my first flight to usa

WBC on a 747-400. Poor Loads given that there were many NRSAs upfront. But, service was excellent.

Sikkim in the news today (Rediff.com):

An estimated 4,000 tourists are reported to be put up in shelters provided by the army at their bases beyond 15 Mile en route to Tsomgo Lake and Nathula after they were stuck because of bad weather.

Boy flies for free from Manchester without PP or tix

11 year boy goes to Italy

Quote:
Despite having no boarding pass at security, no boarding pass at the gate, no passport and no boarding pass stub once on the plane, airport workers failed to notice the boy was on his own. Even a headcount onboard the flight failed to detect the child.
Cool.

I could tell you some horror stories of how I and others were treated by passengers in my 7 year stint as cabin crew, long, short and mid haul.

I had children tell me they did not say please and thank you to servants....

People shout and swear at me as they did not like the food....

One man pin me against a bulkhead and threaten me.... (we diverted and off loaded him!)

Sadly the bad started to outweigh the lovely, lovely ones So time for a change.

I used to have a key ring that said 'cabin crew are here to save your @rse not lick it...' which about summed up how I felt towards the end.

Before being rude to any of them do remember, they have the power to help you and being rude will not entice them to do that, they feed and water you (I have seen some interesting additions for really offensive pax ) and at the end of the day god forbid it will be them that helps save you.

Emma, amen! I am on day number 3 of my retirement after more than 22 years, and am thrilled I will never have to put up with the shenanigans on an airplane again! Plenty of good stories, and yes, you are right, people need to be very careful about how they treat cabin crew, 'cause payback is hell.

22 years I think you need a medal!

Seems like the 'payback' has a common theme across the pond!
