Tourists told to bypass India
AUSTRALIANS have been told to abandon all travel to India because of the growing tension between that country and Pakistan.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has warned Australians to avoid areas such as Jammu and Kashmir.
"Australians should defer all holiday and normal business travel to India," DFAT said.
"In light of the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, Australians in India should exercise care and maintain a high level of personal security awareness."
"Australians in India who have concerns about their security should consider leaving."
The warning comes on top of a similar warning about travel by Australians to Pakistan made by DFAT last week.
DFAT said Australians should avoid all travel to the states of Assam, Nagaland, Tripura and Manipur while exercising caution in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Mizoram.
It said there had been cases of foreigners being attacked or disappearing while visiting the Kulu/Manali district in Himachal Pradesh.
