I was going to list my favourite places (including some of the off the beaten track spots, but in doing so, I started to think about the impact on the areas and it's my belief that this is going to spoil (in some /many instances) the natural beauty of certain locations by having the tourism aspect exploited.

Cheers
Zoltan

By chance I've already been on 90% of the places mentionned. Is really a pity to mega develop places like: "Ganga Heritage River Cruise Circuit" in West Bengal, Gangtok or Jagdalpur-Tirathgarh-Chitrakoot-Barsoor in Chhattisgarh..., I'll not give to this people new ideas to increase the list following Zoltan's advice.

Jorge

PD - What about Vidharba Circuit in Maharashtra???? I know the district from the newspapers after all this desesperate farmers self poisoned.....

I hope keeping Agra on the top of the list does some good for the place...

In my opinion, Taj deserves a lot better...or for that matter, Agra fort and other monuments as well..

I'm all for preserving places from rampant development, but aren't these forums about providing information about India?

Or did I miss some change of policy?

Let's hear it.....I'm also curious what everyone has to say.....

seems like their main objective is to hand out the goodies evenly to all states. i wonder what the above places are doing in the list. what is there to see in tirupati and dwarka?? kurukshetra?? and why monuments that are really in need of attention/restoration arnt on the list.

It seems to me that many of these are pilgrimage destinations and on the list because Indians go there, not foreigners. This has nothing to do with monuments that need protection or upgrading; those are probably on some other list.

that would explain tirupati and dwarka (though dwarka gets only a fraction of the visitors that tirupati does).

do any of the non-indian members know whats supposed to be special about kurukshetra??

also i am still baffled by #13, 18 and 17. they arnt holy places by any means.

According to Hindu legend, Kurukshetra is the birthplace of the Universe. Huge crowds, according to LP, at the time of eclipses and for Gita Jayanti in December or January. Yep, more pilgrimages.

kurukshetra is more commonly famous for being the site of the epic battle in Mahabharat.
