This is what's driving Kerala tourism

Kerala, the God's own country, is witnessing manifold increase in tourist flow, mostly from Germany, Britain and France. The key to this phenomenon is "homestay", which enables tourists to stay with local people. Enthused with the success of the concept, Rajasthan too is ready to try the concept on an experimental basis.

Globally, homestay is not a new concept. Under this arrangement, the host provides accommodation to the tourist in his own house. This concept has been a major hit with the student community. In South Korea, homestay has become an industry, churning in revenues for its citizens.

Does anybody knows of any homestay in Uttranchal/Himanchal.. I think it would be great, if this idea could spread to those areas too

During my kerala trip last year I stayed in Thekkady and Munnar in homestays. I prefer them as they are quieter and the atmosphere of a home is an added bonus..

Didn't an IMer have a bad experience with homestay in Kerala where the hosts did not let her leave etc.? I can't seem to find the post.

hmm.. there could be some rotten apples.. But the ones I stayed with were very friendly. Infact in Munnar we stayed at the home of a Bus conductor.. who was very helpful in guiding us with the routes and road conditions.. pretty helpful since we were on motorbikes...
If you can find the name of the particular homestay.. it should be reported!
Its a nice concept.. and people shouldn't be paranoid by stray incidents..

agreed. but, one should be more cautious when selecting a home stay, than say a hotel. Given that is appears to be becoming more popular in Kerala, is there a referral agency or something similar? How do tourists find these home stay hosts?

We had our first home stay in Alleppy. While looking for accomodation we came across a group of backpackers who guided us to a homestay. From there we got referalls to homestays in Thekkady and Munnar. Word of mouth is the main source... Probably we should document the good ones at IM..

Not exaclty a referral agency but the Kerala Tourism site has a homestay section with some listings by districts.

I do agree that homestays are a great idea and hope that some kind of nodal tourism agency to regulate minimum standards is formed (that is if there isnt one already)

India is so lacking in good decent B&B style places. Its a shame(missed opportunity) to expect tourists to be put through the hassle of finding a decent clean place to stay at a reasonable price.

In Dehradun (Uttaranchal) one family used to have Homestay kind accomodation, Jayant and Rini (Krishna guest house). Their house is on the Rajpur road. (the road leading to Missoorie). Jayant conduct adventure tourism, trekking etc too..

On the subject line I would say - lush greenary, "temples, beaches, ayurveda, hillstations, wildlife, backwaters" with not too long travel time from one to another, generally hospitable people, general levels of cleanliness, as good as it gets - a tourism department, etc are the real driving factors for kerala tourism... Without these even if you had unlimited homestay/B&B options, no one would bother to go to Kerala....

As the above there are also umpteen number of reasons that drive tourists away from Kerala, but for sure the positives outnumber the negatives and as long Kerala would remain a hot destiny!

Phantom - B&B is bed and breakfast stays...
