this is the way to sell India now

http://www.bravenewtraveler.com/2009...-to-boot-camp/

"The average day begins at 5:30 a.m. to the sound of bhajan…once up, patients participate in yogic kriyas – a process that induces controlled vomiting or purgation of the nasal, stomach and intestinal pipes…those prone to migraines are encouraged to insert a thin piece of rubbery wire through the nose and out the mouth. Asthma patients often swallow a thin muslin-like cloth down the esophagus to remove blockages. Others drink repeatedly a mixture of hot water, salt and cardamom....$1500 for an Executive Single Room or $8,000 for a Deluxe Hut a day "

for people with more money than sense....

$8,000 a day for "Deluxe" Sutra Neti etc. They make Boot Camp sound so good. Not! Thank God I'm not that rich!

the whole thing kinda grosses me out! if I had $8,000 a day to blow on India, it sure wouldn't be spent on colonics!

But really? This is how they are trying to sell India now?
Typical journalistic hyperbole! But, at the same time, this tiny-minority-appeal market, strange though it may seem to us, obviously exists .

Of course, what the article totally lacks, is any kind of explanation, reasoning or understanding. I'd guess that at least some of this stuff is ayurvedic, on the sole basis that I've heard of the swallowing cloth thing in that context.

I guess it will appeal to some of the more extreme "health"-fanatic freaks out there --- and the ones with money, of course. Mind you, many travellers head for luxury resorts in Kerala for the ayurvedic practitioners as much as the views; I met a guy at Coconut Lagoon who was just coming to the end of a three month stay for treatment for a back problem. It was never a cheap place to stay, although he probably got a good deal.

Only thing is, can't you imagine the same kind of journalist really trashing the 10-day vipassana course?

Even allowing for hyperbole and journalistic sensationalism, though, this stuff certainly wouldn't sell India to me!

(afterthought... I bet someone sets up a similar centre in California and becomes a millionare )

I think the author was objecting to "selling India" as "Nature's Boot Camp" as per the article she mentions from the Jakarta paper. The hook for the article on the homepage is "When you want to bring the Westerners in, just sell them an expensive and intense way to lose weight."

Because her first question is "What should be the first thing that pops into your mind about India? Apparently, an expensive version of ‘The Biggest Loser.’"

"The Biggest Loser" is a TV show here where morbidly obese people battle, so to speak, to lose weight, and then there's a "winner."

but hey, who needs to spend $1500 a day to lose weight? Just eat some jam cakes in Cochin and you'll become svelte and lean like I did on the "India Diet"!

it was a great way to lose a dozen pounds in a week!

The "Biggest Loser" reference, you'll not be surprised to hear, escaped me entirely. Thanks for explaining.

You could make a fortune on your jam-cake diet idea. Another selling point is that it also ensures fair skin. You were very, very pale !

I was indeed a pale grey! seriously, looking back on it, I was in trouble...the disorientation I was feeling was a prelude to something more serious....so I was told by a nurse.... that 18 hr. flight back home was hell, but at least I had plenty of water!

All I can do is apologise that it didn't occur to us to get you to swallow a length of cloth

Would that be equivalent to the Morarji Desai diet?
