The artist in Satyajit Ray
The artist in Satyajit Ray
Utpal Borpujari Satyajit Ray is known as a filmmaker. But the book released recently in his honour makes known various other facets to the genius, that he was a music director, script writer, and that he even designed billboards. A slightly-built, young, Bengali girl from Madhya Pradesh wanted a letter of recommendation along with her application to the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, and she requested a man, one of whose films she had seen earlier without understanding much about it and then had acted in another again without understanding much about his vision, to write the letter. The letter came, with one sentence written on it, that “You don’t need to go to any acting school”. Read more Last edited by indiamike : May 26th, 2005 at 03:08. |

yes, he created masterpieces.
whether it was a short story or a feluda adventure or the films that even now run to full houses, the answer always was satyajit ray. he carried the rich traditions of bengali culture from where tagore left off. he is truly a legend! there was a rumour that he had a lot to do with the sci-fi blockbuster 'ET' - hopefully, the truth will come out some day. |

another one on the list is the tamil movie nayakan.
but this a sad sad list obviously compiled by people who have no idea abt art, since no film by tarkovsky is there and he is considered by most experts to be one of the 5 best directors of all time (alongside with kurosawa and bergman). yes, satyajit is a legend and i hope a pride of bengal. |

I am no film buff. I'd be hard-put to name six actors or two directors.
But Ray's Apu Trilogy remains one of the few films on my personal Works of Art List ![]()
