CNN just mentioned that the islands of "Car Nicobar" in the Andamans alone have 2000 dead and counting. My fear is it will be a major disaster zone as it is right above Sumatra and in the middle of Bay of Bengal.

A Rare Tsunami, and a Change in Geography

The quake created the Indian Ocean's first wave of its kind in more than a century, and it moved the entire island of Sumatra 100 feet.

The magnitude 9.0 earthquake that struck off Indonesia on Sunday morning moved the entire island of Sumatra about 100 feet to the southwest, pushing up a gigantic mass of water that collapsed into a tsunami and devastated shorelines around the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.

Sri Lanka's worst tsunami in memory killed 70 foreign tourists, including at least nine Japanese, the state tourist board said on Monday.

Sad and shocking.

A Swedish FO spokeswoman mentioned this morning that a (Hercules, I assume) plane is on its way to Sri Lanka with blankets, comm equiment and personnel and medical equipment.

Some of the early news stories here were less than thoughtful : thousands of lives lost, countless vacations destroyed in a not too unjust condensation.

... even now here in Kerala people are really not quite sure about the magnitude..

Most of Kerala lies on the East coast, yet around 80 - 100 were killed around Kollam & Allepy districts. From the few pictures in the newspapers it seems many of the dead are children & women caught COPLETELY unaware..

Here in Varkala we experienced a series of very large waves which fortunately did no more than sweep out a few beach towels and scare tourists and locals alike...

I DREAD to think what happened in TN and Sri Lanka. Information is scarce, though in truth, life is carrying on pretty much as normal.

Everything is up in the air information wise.. Is there much talk of further shocks, potential disease in the worst hit areas ?

Terrible day.. yet uncannily, we are haring precious little ..

I've just got a mail from a friend of mine who is an amateur radio operator that he, after trying for several hours, made contact with his Indian ham buddies who happened to be staying in one of the Andaman islands. They were safe and sound, but they had little information as to how badly the island and other Andaman & Nicobar islands were damaged.

Richter scale 9.0 is unbelievably strong even for a Japanes like me who is used to earthquakes, and Andaman & Nicobar is so close to the epicenter...

11,000 and rising in SL alone. It hardly seems worth typing a figure anymore - I fear it will be doubled.

Beyond the devastating loss of life, there's the loss of industries from fishing boats to hotels. It's impossible to contemplate the level of suffering, now and in the years to come.

The most worrying thing is the fact that virtually no contact has been made with the Aceh region of Indonesia, over a million people live near the coast.

CNN is reporting that the figure has doubled overnight to 22,700. No real numbers from Burma yet either. LA Times reported that the island of Sumatra moved over 100 feet . There is now serious concerns of epidemics springing up. The earth is still ringing like a bell from the earthquake. Let's hope the vibrations echo through the soul of humankind and help all realize that helping our fellow people is much more important than the quest for power and oil in Iraq.

US Geological

The US Geological Survey knew about the quake and were frantically trying to find the government entities in these countries to warn them about the impending tsunamies. They just couldn't find anyone they could warn . These damn South Asian governments should be sued for callous irresponsibility. They ought to be ashamed of themselves for letting so many people die due to their mismanagement.

They would have known it would hit the East of Sri Lanka - a Tamil stronghold, I hope to God the information wasn't sat on by the Sinhalese Government - I know what the SL'ans I trust think of the current SL leaders and none of it has been good!!

Thanks for the New York times slideshow. The more I see this the more it pisses me off. There should be some kind of accountability on part of these governments. It seems like human life has no value to them. They are busy chasing money and helping out the powerful corporations (atleast that's what the Indian government is doing). No sense of responsibility for the poor people and their children. They learn all the values from the west but what's most important (accountability and good management) they conveniently forget.
