Terrible tragedy

We awoke this morning to the terrible news coming from SE Asia. This is very painful to hear now that we are back home. We wish we were there to help. Our hearts go out to the thousands of people that are affected by this enormous tradgedy. The death toll is approaching 10,000 according to the Hindustan Times and we fear that it may be much higher.

These wonderful people will need help. As it gets organized, please use the forum to communicate who is in greatest need. We want to know who is doing the best job of and how we can help.

Here is the report from The Hindu -- photos

Killer waves leave 8,500 dead; 3,200 in India alone Chennai, Dec. 26 (PTI):
Giant Tsunami tidal waves set off by a massive earthquake in Indonesia, the worst in 40 years, today unleashed a trail of death and destruction in South and South East Asia killing 8,500 people, including over 3,200 in India alone, and leaving tens of thousands homeless.

Tamil Nadu bore the brunt of the nature's fury with 1,725 people losing their lives in the state and Andaman and Nicobar, closest to Sumatra coast, the epicentre of the 8.9 magnitude quake on the Richter Scale, was also equally badly hit accounting for 1,000 deaths and suffering extensive damage.

What began as minor tremors at 6.28 am on a lazy Sunday turned out to be a nightmare for the entire southeastern coastal belt and Kerala on the southwest coast where 109 people lost their lives.

Pondicherry, also on the east coast neighbouring Tamil Nadu, reported a toll of 280 people--211 in Karaikal enclave and 69 in Pondicherry. In Andhra Pradesh, 69 people were killed. West Bengal and Orissa were lucky to escpae unscathed.

Nagapatinnam, the small port town of Tamil Nadu, was the worst hit as 900 people lost their lives while Kanyakumari in the land's end reported 400 casualties. Chennai city, where morning walkers were doing their daily chore along the Marina Beach and residents close to the coast were caught unaware by the tidal waves rising up to 30-40 feet, accounted for 125 deaths.

About 5,500 people, including 3,000 in Sri Lanka alone, perished as the tidal waves battered the coasts of Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Maldives

account from Phuket

My best buddie's brother and my friend Reed is living in Thailand, Phuket island for that matter when the 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck . My buddy was actually chatting on line with Reed when the quake hit near Sumatra about 500 miles away, which Reed HEARD as a loud crack and felt. Tidal waves travel about 500 miles every hour, so about an hour later the tsunami hit Phuket island and virtually wiped out everything on the coast. Lukily Reed had moved off the coastline two months ago to a hilly part of the island, so he didn't get washed out to sea. His former girfriend was out snorkeling on a morning diving trip and she and the whole diving expedition is missing. 100s possibly 1000s have died on the island. Its hardcore. My heart felt sympathies to everyone effected.

Its incredible, the power of nature just tosses us around like ants being wiped off a picnic table.,,

Anything I can do?

Hey Guys,

This is Madhuri, first of all I want to say Wanderette( Berit), you and I have been emailing about Chennai tips since I lived there in the past. I hope all is safe with you and your friend there in Chennai.

There must be something I can do. My husband is from Tamilnadu originally and his family was supposed to meet us at the airport in Chennai but cancelled their train tickets. We are meeting them in Madurai. My husband and I are doctors here, I am hoping that we can help in some sort with the tragic news and at least do something. I honestly didnt know how bad it was till this evening when I saw it on the news. People always say Madras is a hot sticky crowded city, but it was my beloved home for 6 years and I feel so sad by these events. I pray for all the victims and the missing in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and Maldives.

Anyone in Chennai now? Hows the situation? We leave tommorow for Chennai via London...

Thanks and god bless,

Madhuri

I spoke to some of my pals in Chennai and they are telling me that only the coastal side of the city is majorly impacted. Most of the people away from the coast line are not impacted at all.

the clippings in TV are really depressing. many people are reported missing and the actual death toll could be much higher. it seems some 2-3 villages in the southern TN coast are completely submerged, and no one has a clue on how many people are dead/affected.

there was an aftershock measuring 6 this morning, and coastlines are on high alert with a possibility of a second round ( though less severe hopefully ) of waves.

Update from ndtv.com and Q about Rameshwaram and Mamallapuram

ndtv.com now reports 4.000 dead in India (totally almost 13.000).
2.367 in Tamil Nadu, over 1.000 on Andaman/Nicobar Islands, 306 in Pondicherry/ Karaikal and 130 in Kerala.
In Chennai 190 bodies are recovered.
1.420 are killed in Nagapattinam district alone.

This is so heartbreaking...
My tears and thoughts goes out to all of you who are suffering from this unbelievable disaster.

My boyfriend and I spent a month travelling/photographing Chennai - Mamallapuram - Pondy - Pichavaram - (Tanjore) - Rameshwaram - (Madurai) - Peryiar - Kollam - Cherai (Kochi) in October. As photographers we spent most of the time with wonderful people in small fishing communities, - not least playing with happy, cheerful kids.

I can't find any news about Rameshwaram or Mamallapuram (the fishing village north of the town). If anyone out there knows something, please let me know. We are so concerned about our little friends and their families.

Hoping the counts stop rising...
